My brother came over to "help" me and we put on the progressive scan...then no picture and you can't see the menu to change. DO NOT use the solution noted here suggesting holding the stop button - this puts on the child lock.
Open the door on the front of the unit; push the DVD button; then push and hold pause button for 5 seconds or more. And progressive scan light will turn off and your picture will reappear!
Thank goodness...I was thinking my brother would be buying a DVD player - hahaha.

Progressive scan mode is used by DVD players to artificially scale standard resolution DVDs to HD resolution, usually 720i. Is your set capable of receiving HD resolution? If not, that is probably why you are getting the blue screen.
1) Remove any DVD that may be inside 2) Press AND Hold Stop Button (on front of Player) for 5 or more seconds 3) All Done - This will have reset player back to Interlaced Mode and you can now see your DVD!
A simple solution that works with electronic items many times, so give it a try. Turn Off your player, un-plug the electrical supply, wait about 2 minutes then re-connect the electricity and turn on the player. Many times this will force the machine to reset itself. This technique can be used for ALL electroinc devices.
Goldstar dvd/vcr combo was stuck in progressive scan. I used the posted solution and now it is out of progressive scan but it continuously reads the dvd and I cannot get the dvd to play. "Reading" conitues to appear on the screen. Any suggestions?
to turn it off select connection method 3 above and progressive scanning mode, to set the mode, set progressive to off in the display menu so that the p scan indicator light on the front panel goes out. do all of this in interface mode. you can also do this by pressing and holding PLAY > on the front of the unit for more than 5 seconds, still watch for the p scan indicator to go off. this works best when the unit is connected directly to the television.
