You can try connecting it to another computer and see if it works there. If it does then it is Windows or your computer or the USB port or driver. You could also uninstall iTunes and reinstall it and then check if it connects. If it shows up then, you can select to restore it on the info screen, it will reset it back to factory and wipe it clean.
In order to get an Ipod to work on your computer never plug it into a USB hub. The hub does something to the power of the device that causes it to not perform, be recognized, or charge. Find a spare USB port to plug it in and see if it will find it.
USB hubs do not work on external hard drive devices. Jump drives will work on a hub
For it to recongnize, maybe try: 1: go to control panel 2:add hardware 3:connect your hardware device and click "yes i have connected the hardware" 4:scroll down and select install new hardware device 5:select install hardware that i manually select from a list 6:scroll down to windows portable devices 7:and choose MTP device this should make it so your ipod is now recognised by the computer ---John
Your ipod has to be plugging into a high speed usb port, that's your problem. Don't use the usb ports on front of your computer, use the one's in the back. Those are typically high speed. If you have an older computer, you might not have high speed usb ports and you'll need to purchase an pci usb 2.0 adapter.
Once you get it connected to the computer and you sync with your library it will remove any songs that were previously on the ipod.
