Not all routers will pass all types of VPN successfully. My last D-Link router would pass a PPTP VPN with no problem, but completely choked on any attempt to pass an IPSEC VPN.
Since you never specified what model router you have, it's difficult to diagnose your problem beyond that observation.
Try a different brand or model of router and see if you get better results. Sad to say, I have found that the low-end routers work fine with completely vanilla networks, but they are very prone to annoying surprises like this when you try anything beyond what the average home user would try.

I have a D-Link DVG-G1402S router, I'm trying to setup VPN connect for a windows VPN server, which inside the network. I tried use modem directly connect to the server, it work, so it process my...

The router's PPTP passthrough and IPSec settings assume that you're connecting to an external VPN server on the public side of the network, but it sounds like you're hosting your VPN server inside your local network. If this is the case, you may just want to have your windows VPN box in a DMZ, or get a router that you can exert more control over. Be wary, if you're doing this at a residential location, your internet provider will probably block or "shape" this type of incoming traffic to your local network.

Unable to connect VPN using Arris Modem & Comcast Router

hi, mate check firewall settings of your modem/router. Then contact your IT administrator and he should be able to make changes to configurations for you. In most cases if server classify's your connection as unsafe it rejects it.

Problem with VPNand Linksys router WRT150N

If that is the case you may forward ports on the router for VPN connection, try to open 47, 500 and 1723 all TCP and UDP protocol.

Here's what you need to do, check the IP address of the computer where you have the VPN software,

here's how:
click start> run> type cmd> hit okay
on the black screen put in ipconfig and check the IP address there,

> when you get the IP address then we can enable port forwarding on the router

> open IE on the working computer on the address bar, type 192.168.1.1

> nothing for username and password is admin in lower case

> then click on the applications and gaming tab on the router,

> and from there, example of how to field that in is like this,

> for aaplication name - VPN1
> for port it is 47 to 47
> for protocol it is BOTH
> for IP address ex. 192.168.1.XX - 192.168.1.100
> then check enable, do the same thing for the rest of the port.
> save the settings and try it again after.

> if it is still nothing, you may connect the computer that has the VPN connection directly to the modem and check if you will be able to connect via VPN

i'll wait for your response, thank you and have a nice day!

Cannot connect to remote Microsoft VPN

Hello, some ISPs require someone to manually/staticly assign a default gateway for a router. With computer connected directly to ISP modem, if using Win XP click start, run and enter "cmd". This will bring up a black text box(CLI). at the prompt> enter ipconfig and click enter. This will show the computers IP address Subnet mask and default gateway. You will need to connect the modem to router to computer. If you haven't changed default settings, From browser enter 192.168.1.1 in window. Enter. This will open router settings. Username and password will be "admin". It may require admin for either or both. You may have a Initial set up link. From here you'll need to enter Default gateway address to access the modem and internet. Hope this helps

Connecting VPN using Netgear 624

This is no small undertaking. You will first have to decide if you are going to use software or hardware vpn. Software vpn is free and only requires that you install it (the client) on whatever remote system you are using to connect to the 624. I can say that you want to have your internet connection point (DSL modem or Cable modem) set to "bridge" mode. This will pass through all traffic to the netgear directly. Some (like a speedstream 5200 DSL modem) allow this or they have a DMZ feature which will accomplish the same. Either way you want to ensure ALL ports and all traffic are getting to the netgear. Once that is done you simple create a string at both ends that match for your security phrase and an authentication that matches and you should be good. It's really a lot more than what could be provided here. (Several lengthy documents worth) but I can provide you with a useful link that will give you an a-z about VPN and has specific walkthroughs for Netgear users only. http://www.vpncasestudy.com/index.html Hope this helps a little.
