Question about Apple PowerBook G4 Mac Notebook

Mac Powerbook Software Issues

I have a Mac Powerbook G4 Titanium that was given to me because it wasn't working properly. There seems to be a number of software issues and I can't figure out what the real issue is. The biggest problems seem to be with mail and internet explorer. Mail closes without warning and can't really use the program. Internet explorer isn't showing web pages properly, not showing the full page.

I'm running OS X 10.1.5 right now. Would an operating system upgrade solve my problems? Is there a recommended OS upgrade for this computer?

the other problem is that I don't have the original disks for this computer. Is there a way to do that without them?

  • jeffmc Jun 11, 2008

No I don't know anyone else running a Mac. Can I make a startup disk from my computer or does that not make any sense at all?

    Mac OS X version 10.1.5

    Memory 1024Mb

    Processor PowerPC G4

I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to OS X 10.5. Unfortunately, I didn't know until I tried installing the software that I couldn't as I was 200mhz shy of the system requirements on my processor speed. Any way around this that you know of?

Hi-

chances are you are having a Corrupt OS, you can actually try to trash and reinstall the softwares that is corrupted or update OS to either 10.4 or 10.5... Hope this helps.

My old g4 powerbook is dead, power supply seems to be alright , all battery lights come on on the back but nothing from pressing the power button, no noises , black screen....

HI Nick, I had a similar problem with my Titanium G4 Powerbook in the past. The batterry lights showed OK, and at first glance the original Apple transparent saucer shaped power adapter seemed to be working. But then I realized that the very thin conducter wires were broken where the flexible wire meets the connector plug. I cut into the plastic insulation and soldered the wires-a very tedious exercise I might add. This worked for a few weeks, and as I was at sea on a ship, it kept me going. But before long the same problem occurred-an apparent dead computer. I solved the problem by purchasing a 65 watt power adapter from PowerbookMedic. It was dirt cheap and I haven't had a single hiccup since, and that was 3 years ago. You can always see a Genius at an Apple store, if there is one close to your home. These people are amazingly helpful.

My dvd rom on my mac g4 powerbook won't read my disks, I insert it then it spits it back out.

Try different DVDs and then try different CDs. If it spits out all of them, then its time for a new optical drive.

This happens, and unless your startup disk is locked up and needs some swap space, it's just a matter of a screen whose time has come.

Powerbook G4 Titanium..sticking on any movement

1. Go to Support on Apple.com, search memory upgrades for your model and follow instructions for inserting the ram modules correctly. These MUST be properly seated and locked or strange intermittent bad stuff will happen.
2. At same time note make and type of memory from label, and double check that it is the correct memory from a high end maker. Macs do not like low-life sketchy memory.
3. Cables that go through the hinges are very fragile and subject to damage as well as wear and tear. Limit opening and closing display, partial or full. Titanium's have well-known hinge problems - do not let them get loose, and Google solutions if they do.
4. Find a nearby Apple store and make an appointment at the Genius Bar. It won't cost anything for a simple diagnosis or repair, and they are VERY helpful as long as you are too.
5. Parts: iFixit.com, and Google many others some with specific repair instructions on-line. I have a spare near new display cable for Titanium's, but replacing this part is extremely difficult for even most experts.

Connecting Powerbook G4 to Sharp Aquos LC-20D10-W

A few tries, go to the apple in the top left and choose SYSTEM PREFERENCES....it should bring you to:

f002663.png

In the HARDWARE row you should see DISPLAYS. Select that and you will be at:
0ceaf58.png

You have the DETECT DISPLAYS button, and also CLICK the "Show displays in menu bar" box, so you dont have to keep going through menus to configure.

If you look at the F7 key, to the right of the NUM LOCK key (F6), that key allows you to switch from expanded to mirroring or vice versa.

You can also check Apple's Knowledge base....

Keep me posted.
