Yes, the phone plugs into the back of the fax machine and I
hear a faint zzzzzzzz noise??

Do you have a way of pluggin a house phone into the back of the fax machine?

If so do you hear any hissing out of the phone line?

Do you have a spare phone line cord to plug inbetween the phone jack and the fax?

That might do the trick.
