Tinand, I did get a response. They did fix it with out charge to me. I did have to stay on their "behinds" and did get in touch with the right person via of emails. I followed all that they ask of me, and let them know the end results...I sent very unpleasant letters to anyone at Canon that would I hope read them. To my surprise my emails were read and today I have my camera back and in working order at no cost to me whatsoever.

Our canon powershot s21s appears to be working except the screen and the veiwfinder are black. What does this mean?

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, and especially so for the Canon S2 IS. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).
To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Unable to take pictures

Your camera will need a lens. Contact Canon regarding repairs (it may be covered due to a CCD Imager fault)

Think that you mean the S2 IS? If so, Canon has not yet to offered an advisory repair of that particular problem (although many people think they should as this seems to be quite a common problem for the S2). There are however some simple things that you can try to revive your camera from the likely "stuck shutter" problem that you're experiencing. See this blog article.

Canon powershot s21s problem

The symptoms are indicative of a CCD imager failure. But you can sometimes jog it back by trying the following:

If the above works, recommend taking a photo at least once a week in a well-lit area to keep it running.

Canon Power Shot S21s screen is black

Hey birdstrike,
According to the manufacturer there are two options. You can try pressing the display (DISP.) button, and if that doesn't work you are probably going to have to get it serviced by an authorized service center. There is a know problem with the CCD sensor on this camera and other model cameras that causes a malfunction when the camera is exposed to heat or humidity. Canon is covering this repair, and I have included a link below to the instructions on what to do.

Black screen

Sounds like you have a bad CCD. You can try contacting Canon to check out your options on how to get this repaired. Unfortunately the S2IS is not on their CCD recall list of cameras.

Canon powershot s21s problem

I have the same problem with my S21S. A long time ago, I tried to find-out what size SD cards would work on this camera. Since there was NOTHING listed in the specifications, I tried a 4GB card. The camera simply would not recognise it, but worked fine when I returned the 1GB card to it. A few days ago, I popped-in a 2GB card to see if that would work. The camera seemed to accept it, and created a directory on it, but this is when my screen went blank. the only thing that is constantly present is a small hand symbol. The stored images can be displayed, and the menus work... I think its locked-up. Is there an "all reset" button, or sequence somewhere? TIA!
