    The thread on the bottom keeps bunching and knotting the faster I go. The Top works fine in any pattern, but the bottom always knots unless i'm going VERY Slow.

Fairly thin on detail as questions go, could we ask for something like an explaination of the nature of your question, is it loose, is it not happening, is it only on zig zag ???????? etc

Try this tension solution while we await further detail, who knows, my powers of deduction may be working on mind reader level after all.

Ensure that all is clean and free of lint and jams, this is the most likely for tension troubleshooting .......

This solution is for tension problems...if you cannot form any sort of stitch, the issue is quite different, so please let me know if you need a different problem solved.....

It is quite long, but just work through each section in order.
The "knotting up" can reveal a lot. If you have loose threads on one side or the other, the tension on the opposite side will be the culprit.

Ensure sharp new needle,
Thread guides and Bobbin are Clean & Clear of lint
Set Top Tesion to 4 ....then....
Balance Bobbin to suit.

If you are using a needle that has seen quite a deal of work, or you suspect it may be blunt, change it for a new one !

Make sure that when you thread the machine the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the discs and not to one side, top tension between 4 and 6, and that you have threaded through all the guides, including the last one, usually on the needle arm, just above the needle clamp.

It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically.

If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread.

Now, with a 2" (50mm) wide strip piece of fabric 8 - 10" (20 - 25cm) moistened with methylated or denatured spirit, gently insert the fabric strip and clean between the discs with
a see saw / to and fro action.

In the worst cases, gentle use of a needle to pick & remove the jam may be necessary, but be very gentle and make sure the tension is set at Zero and the presser foot is raised, (to
disengage tension plates).... do not gouge or score the plates, they need a polished surface to work correctly.

Far less common, but if the loose threads are on the top, it is bobbin tension that is loose, it too may have lint in the spring and be giving a "false" tension.

I would not recommend fiddling with bobbin tension without good reason, it may end up with missing small screws and spring pieces, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean
the hook race area (where bobbin case sits)

...this is just good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin....

just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst.

Then wipe all this area with a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit, especially if there appears to be fine dirty deposits....oil and lint combine to conspire against you.

If it seems likely that you ......really .....actually .....need adjust the bobbin case, first check there is no lint trapped in the metal spring where the thread is tensioned.

Drop-in Bobbin case will look similar to this image with the tension screw in the middle of the metalwork....

drawing up lower (bobbin) thread - 4c76dc1.jpg ...the other screw at one end is holding it all together, so is not a tragedy to undo the whole lot and clean it, but very gingerly and lay the bits out in sequence and orientation, or you risk tearing your hair out !

....this is a bobbin case from a front loading machine and works in a very similar fashion to the top loader with drop in bobbin, again, if you dismantle it, take care so you can put it all
back properly.

When you are certain there's no trapped lint in top tension or bobbin, set the top tension to 4 and the bobbin tension to a point where you just begin to feel resistance.

Try using good quality thread of contrasting colours so you can more easily spot the changes.

Set your zigzag to one width less than maximum (eg. 5 of 6 ...or... 4 of 5 etc) and sew a sample for a few inches and check the result.... adjust the bobbin tension screw very little at
a time, perhaps 1/16 of a turn.

You may find you are playing with this balance for some little while and if you are putting the needleplate on and off each time begin to think it cannot be correct to do is,
and eventually, you do get a "feel" for the correct tension and then it happens quite a user you won't be doing it very often unless there is lint built up (or are there small hands at work around the house !?!?!)

If you live near the ocean as we do, salt air can play havoc with metalwork inside and out, so to help minimise this, keep a few small packets of dessicant (silica gel) in your machine case ? then make some sort of cover !

Same applies in any damp or humid environment, keep your machine dry and dust free.

Budget for a proper full service every couple of years (more often if heavily used) and if you don't use your machine for a few years, be aware that old oil will dry out and combining with
dust and form a "clag" like glue (another reason for some sort of cover, even a teatowel !)

If it is worth spending the time, energy and money on making something that you would like to give lasting enjoyment......use quality thread, may seem to cost a little more at the
time, but the results, ease of use and added longevity will be worth the extra, and as a bonus, your tension troubles may be fewer and further between, because there is a more consistant diameter with good thread, and less compensating to be done by your tension plates and less thread breaks !

(BTW >>>> If it won't pick up a stitch at all, it is the timing or needle to hook distance needing adjustment.)

Bobbin case how to install it.

Follow the below steps to install the bobbin.
1. Prepare the bobbin wound properly before threading the lower thread.
2. Raise the needle by turning the hand wheel toward you (counterclockwise) and raise the presser foot lever.
3. Remove the bobbin cover by sliding it and lift toward you.
4. Put the bobbin in so the thread comes out in the direction shown by the arrow.
5. Hold the end of the thread and push the bobbin down with your finger and pass the thread through the slit.
6. Replace the bobbin cover.
*Put the projection into the race retainer groove and push closed.
*Make sure that the end of the thread comes out from the cover toward the rear of the machine.
*Draw up the lower thread before starting to sew.

I have a Janome sewing machine. There is a problem when i try to draw up the bottom thread from the bobbin. The needle doesnt go through the hole to catch the thread at the bottom

Please elaborate. Is the needle hitting the needle plate so it cannot reach the bobbin thread, or is the needle simply not moving down into the lower position?

The needle with top thread couldn't draw the bottom thread from the bobbin to ready the machine for sewing

Are you saying that the upper thread is not pulling the bobbin thread up to the top?

Install a brand new needle.

Remove the thread. RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning--allows the thread to seat completely in the upper tension disk.

Check that the bobbin thread is inserted in the bobbin case facing the correct direction and that the bobbin case is threaded correctly through the bobbin case tension. Be sure to leave at least a 6" tail of thread on both the upper and lower threads.


If it is still not picking up the bobbin thread, the bobbin case may be defective/malfunctioning or your machine probably needs professional service.

hold thread end w/3" length and put the it in the bobbin case and make sure its unwinding clockwise..Feed thread thru the higher left metal notch and pull to lower left notch and make sure the thread stays behind the spring slot and leave about 4"tail...put bobbin in its place lining up the white dots close the case and turn the wheel to drive down needle holding the needle on the machine base losely and draw the bobbin thread up

My Brother XL-3022 sewing machine has been running perfectly for years, then all of a sudden today I went to use it and while threading the machine I am not able to get the upper thread to draw up the...

There are a few easy and free things to check:
1- try a new needle 2- check that the needle is inserted the right way (one side has a long slot, usually this goes toward the back of the machine) 3- flip the bobbin over 4- clean any stray threads/fluff in the bobbin area
Another possibility is that the machine's timing is off- the bobbin thread isn't in place to be picked up at the right time- and that would need to be fixed by a sewing machine mechanic. But if this started suddenly, and not after hitting a pin or otherwise jarring the machine, then it probably can be solved with one of the easy/free solutions above. Good luck!

Brother sewing machine ls-30 will not draw up the bobbin thread what should i do

Check the needle to see if it's damaged
Make sure the bobbin has a 3-5 inch thread tail
Then make sure the top thread has a 3-5 inch tail
Then hold the top thread tail with your fingers (away from the needle)
& use the hand wheel on the right hand side of the machine to slowly
Lower the needle in the bobbin area & see if the bobbin thread will pick
Up that way

Check the needle to be sure it is installed with the flat side to the back of the sewing machine.

I pulled out the lubricating strip under the bobbin

Bobbin Winding 1 Put spool of thread on spool pin. ] Use spool cushion when using cross wound thread. ] Use spool cap when using parallelwound thread. 2 Lift thread guide bar all the way up, and run thread through triangular thread guide as shown in drawing. 3Run thread through bobbin winding thread guide as shown in drawing. 4 Run thread through top thread notch 1, and align bottom thread notch 2 with guide pin on bobbin winder shaft. 5 Press bobbin stop up against empty bobbin. If the bobbin stop does not slide easily between the top and bottom of the bobbin, check that the bobbin is seated properly with the guide pin (4) inserted into the lower notch 6 While holding the end of the thread, step on the foot controller for a few seconds. Once enough thread has wound itself around the bobbin to hold itself in place, release the foot controller and trim the excess thread. 7 Stop winding when bobbin Begin
8 Manually move bobbin stop back to original position. 9 Cut thread and remove bobbin.

bobbin insertion 1 Lift slide plate (and open bobbin door). 2 Put bobbin into the bobbin case. ] Run thread through thread notch and under latch spring, so that a length of about 10 cm is exposed. ] Use a bobbin case with an idling prevention spring. 3 Pull the latch lever of the bobbin case out and push the bobbin case into the shuttle race and release the latch lever. ] If the latch lever is not all the way on the hook, it may fly off during sewing and cause lower thread breakage. 4 Lower slide plate and close bobbin door, following numbers 1 2 above in order. 6 While holding the end of the thread, step on the foot controller for a few seconds. Once enough thread has wound itself around the bobbin to hold itself in place, release the foot controller and trim the excess thread. 7 Stop winding when bobbin is full. Take foot off foot controller. * Place the thread end so that it does not protrude from the bobbin. Bobbin Stop
so this will be ok and no need to worry about this

Kenmore 15516 bobbin

1. Remove the bobbin case
2. Release the clutch by pulling out the handwheel
3. Draw the thread from the spool andguide the thread throught the hole in the bobbin from the inside to the outside
4. Put the bobbin on the bobbin spindle
5. Push the bobbin to the right
6. Hold the free end of the thread and depress the foot control, wind until full
7. Push the handwheel in (to wngage the clutch)
8. Push the bobbin spindle back tot he left to resume sewing mode.
9. Place the bobbin in the bobbin case (thread should feed clockwise)
10. Draw the thread through the slot in the bobbin case
11. Continue to draw the thread under the tension spring and through the opening Pull out about 4"' of thread
12. Holding the latch open position the bobbin case into the shuttle and release the latch
13. Case should lock into place when released
