Check Ur power settings in the control panel. U may also check the power settings in the bios on reboot (F2). Either one can put the system in shut down or hibernate. Need more information as to what is going on if this is not the problem.

When you say "fan" do you mean case fan or CPU fan? Almost sounds like the CPU fan is inoperative and the system is shutting down on CPU overtemp, then trying to restart.

Whereas Internet Explorer is a very popular browser, you may have problems with it from time to time. Internet Explorer has been known to either randomly shut down or close pages. This can be extremely irritating, especially if you are in the middle of a project. Use these tips to fix Internet Explorer if it keeps closing Web pages.

Start by deleting your browsing history. Open Internet Explorer and click the "Safety" tab found in the top right corner of the Web browser. Then, choose the "Delete Browsing History" option. A box will appear on the computer screen. Make sure that there are checkmarks next to each option listed in the box. Click the "Delete" tab to delete the browsing history. Move to the next step if Internet Explorer keeps closing pages. Gateway gt5468 comes up with windows error box"

Explorer is the main "program" of Windows. (the actual windows and folders and icons and such are run by this software program called Explorer which works with other pieces of software to make up the Windows operating system. Having a recurring error with explorer is not a good thing.
Take the following steps to restart your explorer
-Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and select Start Task Manager if it doesn't automatically pop up.
-Go to the processes tab and make sure explorer.exe is not there, if it is, right click and shut down the process.
-Click File-->New Task(Run)
-type in explorer and hit enter, this should restart the explorer.
-If possible then try running a full virus scan as well as run a scan disk with fix any errors checked

If you cannot get to this process I would recommend backing up all of your important documents and re-installing windows.
I hope this helps in some way, thank you.

WHAT IS THE RESET BUTTON ON THE BOTTOM SIDE OF MY COMPAQ PRESARIO 2500 SPECIFICLY DO. IN OTHER WORDS IF I PUSH IT WILL I LOSE ALL MY STORED INFORMATION ON THE DRIVE?

This is straight from the manual:

Occasionally, Windows or the notebook might stop responding, so that you cannot turn the notebook off. If this happens, try the following in the order listed. Press the power button to restart.
• If possible, shut down Windows: press ctrl+alt+del, and then select Shut Down > Restart.
If the system will not allow a software shutdown, press and hold down the power button until the display shuts down (about 4 seconds) and then release the power button. Press the power button again to restart.
• Use a ballpoint pen or a straightened paper clip to press the reset button on the bottom of the notebook.

In other words: You will not loose any saved data if you reboot your laptop this way. All unstored information (open documents etc.) might be lost though.

Computer is slow as if it is constintly running a program or something - and - sometimes the screen will go blank as if it shut off, but the power stays on

Many computers have way too many things running in the background. If you see more than three or four little icons down just to the left of the clock, (this area is called the System Tray), some of these programs could be causing your problems.
Use Windows Explorer and navigate to:

C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Adjust the size of your Windows Explorer so you can see some of your desktop and drag everything in the Startup folder out on the desktop, and then restart your computer. If this minimizes, or eliminates your problem, put each item back in the Startup folder, one-at-a-time, and restart and re-test your computer until you locate the offending program.

If your computer shut off but the power keep on means that your computer is in hibernate mode
To avoid that, do this:

Go to Start >> Control Panel >> Power Options

Unckeck the hibernatge mode at hiberbate tab.

This will fix your problem.
Don't forget to rate my help! :-)
Thank you for using FIXYA!

My computer keeps telling me that internet explore has caused an error it tells me to send a report and reset my computer i have done that and the problem steel remains

Restart your computer and see if happens again.

If that doesn't work shut your computer down, wait 30 seconds, and power it back up. Turn the computer back on. Just before the windows screen appears press f8 and enter safe mode. Once you get into windows press your internet explorer icon one time. You won't get a connection but it will try to repair any problems.

Then restart your computer the normal way.
