Question about Fellowes Powershred 480 Shredder

1 Answer

Powershed 480 I was wondering what is the life span on these shredders? Also the worth of a used one? I'm looking at buying one that is about I think 6 years old, what would that be worth? Also when did they first make the 480 model. How often do you have to replace the cutters? Any help I would appreciate.

how often should you replace the cutters? I would say it was used average. Just want to get an idea how long they last and the value of a 6 year old 480???

    Thanks

The 480 is a high end shredder but most of your questions depend on the load it has been under for the 6 years. I would check the cutters for wear before buying.

If the cutters can cut say 20 to 25 pages easily then the cutters are still in good shape for another 5 to 6 years with average daily use. The cost of a used 6 year old 480 can be from 600 to 800 dollars. But again all this is speculative and dependent on several factors.

The shredder has started making a whining sound under heavy load - say 10 sheets. It is 5 years old and has had light home usage.

Do you use shredder oil in your device? Even under "light home use" a shredders life is not easy. Ten sheets is a lot of paper to cut.

I use a cross hatch cutter design and I never put in more than 5 sheets and I use shredder oil. Find this product at a FixYa.com advertiser, Staples, Best Buy, Office Depot or any other fine retail outlet.

Shredder motor will run in reverse, but not

Sounds like a bad or dirty switch you can try to clean it with alcohol ( the switch that gets activated by the paper)

Oil leaks into bin

Do you have an automatic oiler on machine?
If so, drain the oil, unscrew the reservoir plug and wrap threads with teflon tape.

Jammed shredder

First UNPLUG THE MACHINE.
Unscrew four (4) screws, two in front underneath top cover and two in back of top cover. BE careful not to disconnect any wires.
Rotate motor gear or belt in reverse to remove jam. Do not put oil on paper because it expands the paper thickness and only makes it worse.

Regarding powershred 480

I have a similar problem with the bin full light and understand I have to clean the sensors. The sensor you could be having trouble with is probably up in the feed slot area. Have a look at it with a flashlight and see if there is paper dust covering the sensor. I clean mine with a toothpick.
I haven't had much luck in finding an official description of where the sensors lurk, just trial and error.
Hope this amateur suggestion helps.
