Hey dave763,
I am assuming you are talking about the Canon 350d camera. You could reset the camera by selecting clear settings. Instructions on how to do this are on page 35 of your manual. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan

To change the "exposure compensation" it's saying

When you change the exposure compensation setting, the camera will change the aperture, the shutter speed, or the ISO depending on the mode you're in and the shooting situation. That's what "compensation" means.

How to change my apature...what button?

Use Av mode to change the aperture.

If you want to do this in Manual, where you rotate the wheel to change the shutter timing, press the Av button on back whilst rotating the wheel to change the aperture.

400D manual mode

You are exposure compensation in manual mode. If you want the shots lighter, either open up the aperture or slow the shutter. The exposure compensation feature is to override the automatic settings determined by the camera in the auto-exposure modes.

Hi - You can download the manual by clicking the link underlined in blue below:

FE-310

Other info here.

This is a fully automatic camera and you cannot directly set the speed or aperture. Try using the "scene" modes.

XT problem with white balance/aperture

You should be able to set your white balance by taking a photograph of something white filling the screen with the correct exposure. If it is underexposed, you will not get white, it will look yellowish. Make sure while you are photographing the object, you switch your lens focus mode to manual.
Go the second setup (tools) tab and select custom wb. The custom white balance screen will appear and you will choose the image that you want to base the white balance off of by pressing the set button.
This will take you back to the menu. Go back to white balance and choose custom wb down in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Hope this helps!

Dark exposures

This could be many things. If indoors, use higher iso setting and/or use the flash. Make sure exposure compensation is set to 0, or raise it. Use one of the automatic programs and let camera pick shutter speed and aperture. In manual mode, pay attention to exposure value in viewfinder, and avoid using higher apertures unless outdoors in bright sun (f16, f22, etc) the higher this number the less light is allowed to camera.

Camera features canon 18-55 digital cmera EOS 350 D

It does different things depending on the camera settings and only works in the creative zone settings not the automatic settings.

In AV mode it changes the aperture
In Tv Mode it changes the shutter speed
In M mode it changes the shutter speed unless the AV button is pressed when it then changes the aperture
