So when you un-plug and re-plug in the usb windows gives you the disconnect /connect tone. if not then you may have broken/cracked the usb connector , have you re-powered the printer and tried a scan test at the printer

First of all make sure you have connected your printer to your computer correctly. Then you click your printer icon either from your desk top or from control panel. You will get a page with various selection. If you want a document to scan, you click the document to file and you will see at right hand bottom page scan. You click on scan and it will scan. Make sure your printer in on and the printer cable is connected at USB port or the correct printer port. Some people connect it to Ethernet cable port!
Once it finished scanning you can either add page or save it with whatever name you wish to give.
no u can't fix it because ur scanner has a rode, i.e looking like a tublight when u scanned a document the rode move one direction to other direction, rode don't move on ur scanner, so ur hp screen says scanner failed, if ur printer is in warranty goto to service center , if out of warranty, open scanne glass cover and check light rode on the scanner, lightly try to move the rode and see is something
bump with this rode , fix it
Please make sure that the printer is connected to a wall outlet and not to a surge protector because surge protector distributes the total electric supply equally to each and every device connected to that surge protector. Printer might work and might not with a surge protector but it will always work fine with a wall outlet till the hardware of the printer and power chord, adapter are working fine.
some times scanner failure error comes if it is not getting enough power supply.So if it is connected to a surge protector then I will suggest you to disconnect it and connect it directly to a wall outlet. Now scan or copy any document and see if something happens.
If not the do check while you press scan or copy button the scanner light is moving or not? If scanner light is not moving then do a hard re-set.
Hard Re-Set : - disconnect power chord from the back of the printer and then from wall outlet or surge protector. - wait for 40 secondsand then connect the power adapter to wall outlet and then to the back of the printer. The try to scan or copy....still not working then check if the scanner bulb is glowing or not?
If scanner bulb is not glowing and if you dont hear any noise while you press scan or copy...then printer hardware has gone bad and you need to replace the printer
Is it connected by a USB cable? Try a new data cable and swapping ports. If you have it connected to a print server or USB hub, try a direct connection. Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer and are more likely to fail to respond to a problem that blocks the signal than the printer. Does the scanner light move and make the usual warm up sounds? Do you have the full software installed or a basic driver from the OS? Do you have the latest software installed?
Disconnect the power cord from both the unit and the wall outlet and the USB cable from both the computer and the printer. Wait at least 10 seconds before reconnecting (resets the all-in-one). Repeat the USB cable removal with the computer and the printer on. Reboot the computer (in case something is locking the scanner in memory).
Check if the scanner shows up as an imaging device. Click My Computer (in some versions of windows), Properties. Click the Device Manager tab. Open Imaging Device. Highlight the all-in-one and click Remove. Try scanning again. (This can be found through the control panel on other versions of Windows.)
Try a new USB cable. Directly connect the printer to the computer if using a hub or print server. Try plugging the unit into a different USB port. Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer and are much more sensitive to anything that may interfere with that communication.
Do you hear any sounds that indicate that the light source is warming up and moving in the unit? Check if the scanner has a travel/shipping lock and unlock it. If it isn't moving, then you may need to service the unit.
make sure that the printer is connected to computer through USB cable.Try to install the latest version of Printer software from www.kodak.com/go/downloads
on your computer. then open the kodak home center software and click on scan pictures.
Adjust the settings and you are ready to go.

Go to Control Panel >> Device Manager, look for the scanner in 'Device Manager' under 'Imaging Devices'
Right click on it and select 'Uninstall' and allow it to be uninstalled.
Remove the USB lead from the scanner.
Re-boot the Computer.
Once windows appears and is ready toi use, re-connect the scanner USB lead.
Windows should re-install the drivers and tell you the scanner is ready to use................hopefully!
Is there is a **** in the scan head or possibly a humming noise each time you try to scan that then stops? If so, most likely the gear assembly that moves scanner across the glass surface is damaged.
If there is no recognition at all then it may be related to the software. Try to uninstall, move the device to a difference USB port, reinstall, and reattach the device. Then be careful when plugging and unplugging the device, changing the USB will sometimes corrupt the device profile.
Possibly there is a key that locks the engine that moves the scanner lamp, and that key may be locking the engine, and when the scanner try to move the lamp, the locked engine overloads the circuit, and turn off the device. Search for that key, and unlock this, (if it´s really locked).
If you've tried the printer on different PCs and still didn't work looks like there is something wrong with the scanner internally. When you start the scanner fresh, the scanning light has to move up and down the glass if it doesn't may be something is stuck on the mechanism open it and check for lose cables or dirt. Other option will be that If you bought it on the last 11 months try send it for "Manufacturer's Warranty Repair" you can call HP costumer service and ask them where you can send your unit for service, make sure you use a traceable method and keep records. Or take it to the nearest dealer and have them look at it.
