Motor for Air handler will not stay on.

Hi there,

I have a Goodman Air handler and I replaced the motor last year. I noticed last night that the motor was starting, running for 2 seconds, shutting off, and then restarting every 30 seconds for the 2 seconds and then repeating. Please help! It's hot in Dallas Texas today!

Thank you,
Gabe

Sounds to me lik eyou may have a bad run capacitor. this will most likely be an oval shaped device directly wired into the motor. Be very cautious when you remove this and make sure you discharge it to a grounding source as it will shock you.

I had a 2 ton 13 SEER air handler installed last August to replace one about 27 years old. The condenser was installed about 14 years ago and it's rated as a 10 SEER. Is there a problem of them operating...

The air 'handler' is nothing more than a type of fan turned by a motor.
The condenser however is a sealed, closed system with coolant that will need to be properly removed (EPA stuff). The condenser must be installed with care, recharged, then checked for leaks.
There is far more involved than replacing an air mover.

I do most of my repairs myself but sealed systems that must be charged is something I leave up to a pro.

Marion, if there was a lightning strike and then a power surge when the power came back ON, I don't doubt what the servicemen had to say. The age of the unit plays no role in it, when something like this happens. Power surges can be killers to electrical appliances. That's why it always wise to turn the unit off during a power outage. Just ask anyone who was in Irene's path a couple of weeks ago. Power went out for days & weeks for some, when it came back ON, electrical appliances were damaged or ruined or started house fires.

Hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have a 6 year old Goodman ClJ24. Today I noticed that the motor in the unit was running backwards.Instead of blowing out hot air from the top, it was sucking in air. Also unit suddenly is not cooling.

Hi,
Yes, once in a while the motor will just start to run in reverse...this is not fixable... you will need to replace that motor...and as you can see if it is not running correctly you will not get proper cooling...

Furnace unit to be louder now than last season

Check your air filter, make sure all registers are open full and there is no restriction in all ducts. Could be an unbalanced fan, clean the squirll cage fan with a brush and vacuum.

Hi,

If you can safely check the supply to the motor when it should be on, then this is the best method to check it.

Check the fan turns very freely - oil the bearings if it doesn't.

If there is power there, but it does not turn, replace the run capacitor.

If this get's you going - Please rate as Fixya so others may benefit. Thanks!
