If you are using LCD monitor and you have one or more black lines on any sides of your screen, your LCD panel is defective.

Desktop screen

try booting in safe mode and see if the screen displays properly.

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is normal.

Try connecting another monitor to the computer. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and connect it to the computer. If the Borrowed monitor shows the 1 inch black space then your video card might be going bad or you might have a virus infection. If the Borrowed monitor displays ok then your original monitor is bad.

E machines flat computer screen began blinking and having colored lines going through it after turning black. By odd mishap I realized when I pressed on the screen it stopped doing that. That has been...

By the way, is it an LCD screen? I guess so. LCDs have small IC's either on the lower portion or in the left side of the screen. When these become loose, the tendency is to have vertical or horizontal lines on the screen. Hot air blower might solve the problem. But most will not. Better claim warranty or replace the unit.

Do you have a monitor that has the buttons in front ( or back!) that can change the size, hight, and shape (tropizode?).Maybe those controls are miscontroled.Usually there is one button that acts like a MENU.press that and follow directions.
2nd) MHG8767726:: you may have to change or replace the video card, if you are using one. or you may have to " turn off " the video drivers through your BIOS, then install a new video card. The key was what you said:: "" the power went off the last time i was using it and when i turned it on again the welcome screen was not a full screen--""

Have black line on right side of screen and cant see all of icon on left side of screen

What type of screen do you have? If it is a CRT (rather than a flat panel) it is probably due to the screen alignment.

Go into the menus on the actual monitor and look for something called Horizontal Alignment (or similar). You should be able to move the whole picture left and right. You may need to play with some of the other settings (e.g. Horizontal Size) to get it just right.

2 inch black on both sides of the monitor (Horizontal)

Hi Bj, Is it an aftermarket video-card? If it is, like ATI or Nvidia, Download the recent drivers for your particular card, Uninstall your Videocard from device manager, then install the software.
