Wireless network How can I tell if my pc has wireless capabilities? I am hooking up a router but I'm not sure if I need a wireless receiver as well. Isn't there some way you can look at the back and tell? My pc was originally 98 but upgraded to XP

If you were using Desktop PCs, then usually you need to install a WiFi Card to make it WiFi Capable (its like a LAN Card but with Antenna, or you can simply purchase a USB WiFi device if you dont want to open your Computer. if you were use a Laptop check for WiFi setting or switch on your Laptop and turn it on, make sure your WiFi driver is installed properly.

SOURCE: wireless capabilities

Do you remember installing a wireless adpater on the pc that you upgraded to win xp? if not, then you really need to get a wireless receiver. Or you can also check you network connections under control panel, see if you have a wireless network connection under LAN or highspeed internet, if not you really need to get a wireless receiver for your computer.

Tring to get PC to send signal to hp printer thru belkin N300 router

  • Hook up printer to network.
  • Give the printer a static IP address outside of DHCP scope. (If your network address is 192.168.0.0 typically any address from 192.168.0.1-50 will be. 192.168.0.1 will usually be your router.
  • Install the printer on computer with appropriate driver and install as a network printer, not local.
  • Enter the IP you gave the printer.
  • Done

If your printer doesn't have networking capability let me know and I can explain setting up a printer share.

I have intel wireless installed on a Dell 620 laptop. This machine will hook up to a Belkin router but will not hook to my linksys or Cisco router. Will the intel system stop me from connecting to my Cisco...

there is no reason for brand incompatibility. things you need to check:
what wireless protocol is your card capable of? Most currents cards are B/G capable and some are N. however, if a router is broadcasting N and your card is G your card will not be able to connect. So you need to get them to match. Also, some cards can't connect to a router that's not broadcasting an SSID. If you can't even see the wireless network from your laptop when you scan for existing networks, this could be the reason. If you can see the network but not connect to it, is it asking you for an authentication key? If an authentication key is setup on the router, you'll also need to know what that key is to connect.

I have a 2wire router, if I purchase a couple new laptop computers which are wireless ready, do I need to purchase wireless adaptors for networking?

No, not at all.
I can't even think of a newer laptop model that comes without wireless capability anymore.

Which 2wire router you have, determines the speed of your wireless network.Make sure when you buy a laptop, that it's wireless capabilities match those of the router. The standard today is 802.11g, backwards compatible with 802.11b. 802.11n is a new standard (backwards compatible to 802.11b/g), and both router and computer have to support this standard in order to use it.

When i hook it up i get the laptop to pick up the signal but the desktop will not go online

on the hind side of the modem how many ports do you see
my guess one port slightly seperated and named INTERNET or WAN and four more ports numbered 1,2,3,4

now connect the network cable from the modem to the WAN / INTERNET port and connect the laptopand PC to the ports1,2

now check to see if there is connection to only on Laptop or both

but if you have conection to only the laptop/PC connected to port1 then try this small trick

move the laptop to port 3 and in port 1 connect the cable from the modem which was connected to the WAN / INTERNET port

and u r set to go

Need help dynex security sync wireless

according to the manual that i have, the model if the router that you have, DX-E401, is just a broadband router and doesn't have wireless capability. if that would be the correct model of your device, there's no way that you can enable the wireless encryption since it doesn't have wireless capability. but if you are really using a wireless dynex router, follow the steps below on how to access the router's page and enable the security.

access the router's setup page by typing http://192.168.0.1 on the address bar of your web browser (i.e. internet explorer, firefox etc). by default the username is admin, then leave the password blank.
you will be prompted with the router's page, now go to the wireless settings and look for the encryption field and enbale wpa from there.

if you are not sure whether your router has wireless capability or if you are using another wireless router just give me the exact model and brand then ask me

ciao!

Connecting a router so I can use a second desktop pc

In addition to a wireless router you will need a wireless reciever for each PC you wish to have working simultaneously (assuming the PC does not already have a wireless networking capability) .

The wireless receiver is usually a USB or laptop PC slot device which you plug in to the PC and after installation of the necessary software (usually supplied with the device) you can surf wirelessly. The USB type wireless devices are about GB£20 to buy .

As long as the computer you are connecting has the capability to connect in some form, wireless or wired, you will not have to run the web utility again. However, if you are currently connecting your laptop wirelessly, and you are connecting your other computer with a wired connection, you must make sure that the wired network is not disabled.

Cannot connect wireless

the fact that wired works and wireless limits the number of issues on the wireless connection and would have been a first testing step eliminating the wireless configuration as an issue.

review

to determine the revision of your wireless router A, B, C, D, E and get the guide. This should allow you to access the configuration of the router to compare to the configuration of the USB wireless adapter.

If you need additional assistance I will need to know the revision number so I can get the same manual for reference.

I cannot find an online version of the mac adapter guide -- are you capable of configuring items for this device without detailed assistance as I will not have a reference manual? Can you open the configuration for the USB adapter and tell me what is displayed to help fill in the answers?

Please also answer the following to help me assist you (assuming you may actually need additional help)
Also did you get the router new or did it have a previous owner?

Did you configure the router in any way after receiving it?

Have you ever configured a router or network card before?
