A little more direction on this please? What does "right interface" mean?

  • D Tacey Jun 11, 2008

Thanks - I needed to check for myself because I have a kid here who says that particular printer needs something else that cost about $200 to make it operate wireless. Any truth to that? It does have a usb and serial port on it.

  • D Tacey Jun 11, 2008

Yes. It is a Linksys WRT54GL with 4 ports.

I have three computers set up on it via the little usb antennae. Nothing connected directly except for the dsl modem. It is over by the printer.

  • D Tacey Jun 11, 2008

So, if you don't mind, what do I need to do? Do I need another usb antennae to plug into the printer? I probably should download the driver also I would suspect.

If your printer is USB then you need a wireless USB print server. If it is a parallel interface, then you need a parallel USB print server.

Do you have a wireless router already?

You don't need nothing else then.

You just need a wireless print server for your printer that is for USB printers.

Add the printer to the wireless router as another node via DHCP. Then add the printer by the IP address. Your server does not have wireless so it will need to be connected to the router via network cable.

Or, you attach the printer directly to the server via parallel port (RS-232) cable. Or upgrade the server with an USB port, and connect it that way. gl

Will my x2500 print wireless?

It is not possible to connect this printer wirelessly because it only has an USB connection to a computer unless you attach this printer to a print server and then to a wireless router.
Alternatively you can set up this printer as a Shared printer on a computer on your 10baseT LAN network. Other computers on your network can then printer to this printer provided the computer with the printer is switched on (booted up).

Can the epson R220 print wireless

It can't print wirelessly with the native hardware. It has a USB 1.1 connection. You may be able to find a print server that can connect to a wireless router. However, you will need to check the specifications. Some print servers will only work with select printers or OS combinations.

The specifications for the R220 are here: http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&infoType=Specs&oid=58654761&category=Products .

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(note since this is an older printer with a USB 1.1 connection, you can expect the printer to be slow with a wireless connection. If your signal strength drops, you may need to reboot everything (computer, print server, router and printer).)

How do I know what my SSID is for my NetGear router Can I hard wire a printer and also send jobs by wireless to same printer? Do I have to download the software in order to print wireless from a different...

Go into the router configure to view the wireless settings, it contains the SSID and encryption etc.
Open IE browser and enter the Netgear URL configuration IP address (http://192.168.0.1)

A network printer must have a built-in print server or be attached to a print server device on the network then all the computers on the network can access this printer.
For a run of the mill printer to work as a network printer it needs to be attached to a computer which is on your network and the printer needs to be setup as a shared printer. This printer and computer must always be switched on for the other computers on the network to access and print to this printer. This method does not require any additional software.

Need my laptop to communicate wireless to printer

If the printer does not have a built-in network card/print server then there is a couple of ways to do this.
If you have a desktop computer connected to the wireless router with a LAN cable, then connect the printer to the desktop computer and make this printer a shared printer on your network. This means that the desktop computer and printer needs to be on when you want to print from the laptop.
The other way is to purchase a print server, connect the printer to the print server and connect the print server with a LAN cable to the Wireless router.
If you don't have sufficient network ports on the wireless router then you need to purchase a hub. Then connect the hub and wireless router with a LAN cable and then the print server to the hub and other computers to the hub.
Setting up the wireless printing will depend upon which method you want to adopt and I can advise you when further when you are ready.

The printer and print server has to be connected to the wireless router by a network cable for you to print wirelessly from the laptop.
If possible connect a long network cable between the print server and the wireless router or move the router next to the print server and printer.
You maybe able to use a wireless repeater/extender but is it worth the added costs and complication. The extended range would invite hackers unless you secure your system.
