Question about HP Modems

1 Answer

No power My computer will not power up. Lighting struck near my home. There was a power surge for a few seconds. The green light is on in the back of the computer and I tried turning on and off, reconnecting the cables.Nothing! I had it checked by the IT dept at work and the power source is "dead". Is that expensive to fix?

It depends if your computer is under warranty. it is some kinda expensive to fix since its the power source thats been affected. better bring it immediately to a computer technician or your computer manufacturer if it is still under warranty. also it depends if the computer monitor has been affected also.. if it is only the main computer tower you can just buy a new computer tower and have it set up with your monitor.

Your computer is not communicating with the router and modem it needs to reset to factory specs then reboot the computer, modem then router in that order. If this does not work contact your dsl provider for info as to your ip address ,gateway and reset with the provider.

BellSouth AT&T Motorola Modem Red Light/s, No Internet

Modem, Router and PC

1. Press and hold the reset button on the back of your modem for 10 seconds to fully reset your modem to initial factory defaults.

2. Wait for the modem's Power and DSL LEDs to turn solid green.

3. Open your computer's Internet browser and your modem should launch a mini-setup routine. Enter your FastAccess DSL username in the format of yourusername@bellsouth.net, enter your FastAccess DSL password and confirm your FastAccess DSL password and click next, then there will be an "Auto Calender Update Configuration" page where you will set the auto update info and timezone info so just enter the info and click next.

4. Your browser will refresh the page and say everything is ready to go, this may take a few moments. When this is complete type 192.168.1.254 into your browser's address bar and click on the "Broadband DSL Line" tab, then on the right, click on Connection configuration.

5. Change the Protocol from the dropdown box to Bridged Ethernet Mode, and then click on Save and Restart Connection.

6. Open your computer's Internet browser again and type in 192.168.1.1 into your browser’s address bar. In the Internet Setup, change the Internet Connection Type to PPPoE and enter your FastAccess DSL username in the format of yourusername@bellsouth.net, enter your FastAccess DSL password and click on Save Settings.

7. Close all windows and restart your computer. Your internet should now be working.

Hello,

It sounds like your network card was damaged by a power surge, most likely what brew the power supply too. When you power up the PC now the network card tries to start and kills the network line going to the router, when PC is off the card does not short and the router works like it should. You should be able to put a new network card in a open slot in the pc and connect that one to your router.

I hope this helps, If so please rate my solution.

DSL modem no power in house, OK at shop, same cables.

Well, by process of elimination, it sounds like it may be a problem in the wiring in the house. Your best bet may be to test your outlets for proper wiring (ie. hot/netural faults), and for cycle rate (in hz, 60hz is nomal). I would also look into a surge bar that is built for normalizing power (Often called Power Cleaners). If you have older electrical service into your house (fed from a pole) or if you are in an apartment or condo type building, there may be line problems with the power supply. Basic outlet testers are under $10 and really handy to have around if you do any sort of electrical work, but the surge bars can be quite pricy. I would look at other outlets in the house that have similar AC/DC converters attached (like cordless phones, laptop computers) and see if it works in those outlets. Really a very strange problem, and may go deeper then just the modem itself.

maybe you have to wait for your provider for them to isolate the problem, it seems that your modem got hit maybe by high surge. ask them to bring a spare modem for isolation.. there is no way for you to isolate the problem coz you've already done the basic....

1st time installation: cannot install modem properly

Hey try this one, if doesn't work let me know. First you have to powercyle your modem - meaning turn it off for 10 to 25 seconds then power it up again. Then check status of the modem lights. It should all be in solid green. Else you have to check if cables are properly connected - Data cable (green cable) one end connected to the filter with labeled "DSL/PHN" or the one with monitor engraved, then other end connected to the green port on the back of your modem. Then check also connection of filter to walljack. After which check status of the lights. If still not all in solid green. Check devices near to your modem, these might be the reason for interference of DSL signal. Electronic such as monitors, speakers... must be 2-3 feet away from your modem. Check modem lights. If all in green, test connection. Also there should only be one phone jack connected to your DSL phone line.

WESTELL MODEM LIGHTS BLINKING

Did you disconnect your dsl connection from the back of the modem? I'm more familiar with cable modems than DSL, but I would imagine they share a commonality: electrical surges coming down the line during lightning storms.

I'm guessing that's what happened to your modem - it probably got surged through the DSL line. Have you called your DSL's support line to see if they have any ideas?

If it's been surged all you can do is replace it. Do check with the DSL company first before you go putting out any major expenses.

Hope this helped!
