My mother received the Durabrand CD-1493 for Christmas. She has just recently tried the CD player on the unit and it skips. We tried a brand new CD and also older ones and burn copies. It doesn't matter they all skip. We do not have a receipt and the local Wal-Mart where the person said they purchased it does not carry this unit at this time. There is a manufactured date of October 2007 on the unit. Is there anything we can do?

Pull the top off the unit and use a can of Dust Off (compressed air) and clean out the inside. Then use a Laser lens cleaner and run it thru the unit once or twice. This is considered normal maintenance on a 300 or 400 disc changer that should be done annually. If it still won't play a disc, replace the unit, the replacement model is around $ 199.00. A repair would easily cost that much. Hope this helps.
you didn't say which "ES" model of player it is but i assume it has the KSS-240A laser pick-up, or something very similar. i've repaired so many sony cd players i've lost count and 90% of them have been down to the same fault you describe.given the age of the player the most common cause of skipping is hardened grease on the laser sled and the drive gears which causes resistance in laser movement hence the skipping. try clean as much of the old grease off the sled & drive gears as possible and relubricate. i've used a drop of light machine oil in the absence of a light grease which has made lasting repairs. but run only a small drop along the sled taking care not to drop any on the laser itself. if of course you have any light grease then i would use this but not too much. hope this helps?
Have you tried downloading the most recent rom update for the CDN-90?
All you need to do is download it from here http://www.numark.com/contentmgr/showdetails.php/id/1493/tt/5 , then burn the download to disc. Once that's done, put the disc into the player, switch the player off and wait 10 seconds, then switch it back on again. the player will read the disc and flash the ROM. this should reset the player for you. Before you ask, you can out the disc into either side of the player. Full instructions are given with the download.
You seem confident enought to take it apart, have you tried cleaning the runners that the laser runs backward and forward on. Some times they collect dirt/dust and the laser can't move smoothly so it jerks and skips.
hi i've had the same problem i though it was the laser or the laser rail until i opened it!! Then i checked the laser, the rail and all the other mechanical it worked fine, until i got to the laser it had a hair right in the middle, don't bother trying the cd cleaner it doesn't work! all i di is take out the laser cleaned it with a cotton suabe and alochol for a bout a minute and now it works beautifaully! also clean the circle thingy that spins and holds the cd! any little particle will make that laser not read the cd right! while ur there tryin cleaning the unit from dust! it's the worst ememy! well hope this helps!
