Samsung HLP6163W Problem- TV keeps turning off!

We bought a Samsung HLP 61" flat screen about 3 years ago. It's been running fine until a few months ago. It started shutting off on it's own. We would turn it back on and somtimes it would stay on, but sometimes it would go off again some minutes later. The problem got progressively worse (with only a few minutes lapsing between shut offs) so my hubby took out the lamp and replaced it. We only had 3000 hours on the first lamp. Anyway, after replacing it worked fine for a few days, then started acting up again. Now, the TV pretty much shuts off as soon as it turns on. Can anyone help troubleshoot? We spend so much money on this TV and the replacement lamp and don't want to toss it out! We are thinking about hiring a repair guy but wanted to first check and see if we could resolve it on our own since money is now tight! Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I too am having the same problem with my 61". I've searched the internet for a solution and have yet to find one. When your tv shuts off, does the sound shut off too? That is what is happening to me. Mine stays on for about 2 minutes and then turns itself off. I can push the power button and it will come back on for another 2 minutes. This can be repeated over and over. After talking with different parts stores, I am told it could be a power board or the ballast. I'm not sure about the ballast though. Would I still have sound if that was bad? I also can't find the part number for my TV that is the power board. I have the hl-p6163w. I'm sorry that I don't have a exact solution for you, but I was hoping maybe you had found something out yourself. I pretty sure it's not a ventilation problem, as it has plenty of space from the wall and I've even used a fan to pull the air out of it. Thought it might be the cover sensor so I taped it down. No luck. The fans are working and the tv does not make any weird sounds. I've cleaned it, reseated the lamp, and reset the lamp hours. I'm stumped!

Hi I have a very similiar problem. With my samsung it's had so many problems and is only about 4 years old. About 6 months ago it was making a horrible sound and got louder and louder we were told it was the color wheel had that changed and it was fine for about a month or two. Then it started to go black after about 40 minutes or so however the sound does still work it's just the picture that didn't show. So today we put a brand new bulb lamp and it worked for about 2-3 hours and all of a sudden picture went black however sound is still on. When this happens the only way the TV will turn off is to unplug it. We have to keep it unplugged for 1/2 an hour and when we turn it on it will come on for 15 minutes or so and the again the same thing!!! It can't be the color wheel or bulb since those have been changed!! Can someone please help out as this is becoming ridiculous and quite frustrating that today qwe chnged the bulb and can't even watch TV without it turning off every 15 minutes and then us unplugging it for 1/2 an hour or longer!!!! Also twice when it did this the three lights in front did come on flashing. the first two were green(timer and lamp) and the last one was red(temp)::((

My Gosh! I have a 42" samsung that is doing the same thing. I have only had it for 2 years and mine also goes black but the volume can still be heard. I am so glad to hear that someone figured it out. I am disappointed in my samsung and think maybe next time I should buy a different brand (of course not right away since I paid a lot of money for this one). Any recommendations? Does anyone know if this would happen with any brand?

Well, I have had the same exact problem and since my hlp6163w is still under warranty, I had a technician come out to repair it. And...the winner is a bad ballast. The Ballast has also affected the bulb. So, the answer is you need to change the Ballast and the lamp to get the problem resolved. A faulty Ballast will always destroy a a lamp. Sorry for the bad news as this will cost you a total of $400.00 to replace. It sounds like there is a defect in the ballasts that were made for this particular set and a recall should be made. Hope this helps!

I bought my 46" samsung

The Capacitors on the Main Power PCB are failing which is why it's taking 3 attempts for them to charge before the TV will switch on.

These could be replaced for a few $ if you know someone with the technical ability and equipment.

Failing this it would require a new PCB at around $120 + fitting.

You don't mention if you get a picture or not but you might want to check the lamp for signs of damage. I think you will want to check samsung's website samsung.com/support and type in your model, some of these model are experiencing similar problems and there might be a firmware update for this.

Does the menu come up? If it does, then, the source could be the problem, such as the cable or DVD player. If the source is not the issue, then, the problem would be in the Digital or Analog PCBs. If the menu does not come on, then, the problem is more than likely the DMD. If it is not the source then call a local authorized Samsung servicer in your area. Contact 1-800-Samsung. Hope this helps.
