Is it powered by the cig lighter?
The reason for the problem, is that there are many things in the circuit, and the converter is "the straw that broke the camels back". It puts the draw to more than the fuse can handle.
If there is any way, I would:
1. See if the car has an extra cig lighter power connection
2. Get one that hooks directly to the battery.
3. Make sure that the converter is not bad.

Power light comes on - numbers lock is lit steady, caps lock and scroll (I think that's what it is) flash. Screen stays black and then the laptop turns off...??

Can be one of three things:

Power not adequate enough for laptop - You can purchase a new power adapter relatively cheap from eBay for around $10.00. It may have been surged and will not allow the battery to charge or allow enough power to start the computer.

Bad battery - Take the battery out of the laptop and try it without. if it works, replace the battery or use without it.

Bad screen (inverter) - The inverter can be damaged. This can be caused by wear and tear, being dropped or other. The inverter is like a lamp that sits behind the screen. Take a flash light and place it directly into the screen to see if there is indeed a picture back there (will be very dim). If so, replace the inverter (difficult) or replace the screen (simple). Easier diagnosis would be to connect another monitor and see if it comes on (instead of the flashlight method).

Looking for a car charger to suit a compaq presario 2500. Are they available? Thanks

Purchase a power inverter from your local electronics store (they cost about $15-20 for a 75 watt adapter). An inverter converts the 12 volts from your car to the 120 volts AC that you get from your wall outlet. You plug in your laptop's adapter into the inverter, and then you plug the inverter into your car's lighter socket.

I have a compaq evo n1015v laptop which comes on fine but cant really see the screen, very very dull, have changed the screen but still does the same thing???

The luminiscent tube is not powered or defective. Check the connection between the laptop and inverter board (small pc board at the bottom of the screen), between the lamp and the inverter board, the fuse of the inverter board and the lamp itself.
I use guaranteed working lamp to check if the inverter works. After that I check the lamp of the laptop powering it with another inverter, taken from a broken scanner. Inverter boards are very common and you can easily find replacement on ebay. Be careful with the voltage going to the lamp. It is very high and you can easily burn the inverter or your finger. Remove the power and the battery before opening any covers.

Can my toshiba laptop run on a 175watt power inverter in truck? the toshiba is satallite l305-s5974, and inverter is a roadpro 175watt/140watt constant with overload/overheat protection built in? the power...

you dont need to buy anything from radio shack, the inverter that you have will be just fine. i have used smaller and im sure cheaper inverters with no problem. i keep my company laptop constantly plugged in and charging all day everyday running service calls.

The screen is white >>>

Your inverter board is OK otherwise you will not get any light on the screen, there is only one inverter board, Check the flat ribbon cable connected to the LCD panel (locate behind the LCD panel), when this connector comes off you will get white screen.

Lcd back light ptoblem

Could be a problem with the mainboard, or the tube in the screen, or you recieved a dead lcd inverter.
If your not getting voltage to the inverter, but you can see a picture correctly on an external monitor, you may have a bad cable, or mainboard.
Check all fuses near where the lcd cable connects to the mainboard (you may need to look on the reverse (underneath side) of the board.

On one acer I'm currently working on,(that had a smashed screen, I installed a replacement screen, and had the same issue. So I replaced the inverter - same. I tried a good test tube on the inverter - nothing. I then disassembled the notebook and removed the mainboard. On the opposite site to the lcd connector I found a fuse labelled F2 (near a larger fuse labeled F1). This has shorted out.

I would test this before assuming the new inverter is dead.
I suspect that by replacing that you will get power to the inverter.

Unfortunately I dont know the rating of the fuse, however. I presume 12v but no idea on amp rating

Good luck

One of 2 things happened....
1) You Blew the Power Inverter... The Power inverter is a thin rectangular circuit board that plugs into the display panel cable and also powers the LCD Bulb.. If This Part Fails - You Lose Light to the Display even though the display will still be on and viewable against a bright light....

2) The LCD Bulb is Faulty... When the LCD Bulb Fails it will typically give pre-warning signs- though not always.... It will give signs like the whole screen has a light orange or pinkish tone to it, but eventually it will blow and no light at all to the Display Panel....

Both Of These Are Repairable....

The Power Inverter Can Be Purchased Off of Ebay, For Around $15 to $30

The LCD Bulb Itself is also Replaceable.. Though It is a Job Only to Be Performed By An Experienced Laptop Tech... Bulbs as well can be bought off of ebay for a few bucks..

Laptop inverter problem

you have major problem here - the power regulator on the motherboard which regulates the line voltage down to 12V to feed the inverter, and battery voltage /up/ to 12V to do the same, is blown. I've seen this happen in HP laptops - line voltage to the inverter on mains power reads at 18.2-18.5V (which overloads the inverter), on battery it reads 10.5-11 (which won't fire the inverter). This is usually a sign of a bigger problem. Usually one that involves replacing the motherboard.

Using a 12 to 110 inverter to power it

Check that the power adapter for your laptop supports 110V.
Measure the output power with a multimeter. If its below 110VAC (Alternating Current) your not getting enough power.

Does your computer work when its is not plugged in the Inverter?
