Question about Compaq Armada 1700 Notebook
Every time I open my Compaq Armada, it gives me a Black Screen with message: "Non-System disk or disk error; Replace & Strike any key when ready. Please help me asap. I really need to use my laptop. Classes have already started. Thanks!
In a post to another armada 1700 user, I described in detail how to recover bios settings.
the bios setup program has a menu for boot priority. usually floppy first, then cd, then HDD.
Changing boot-order may render your HDD visible to the BIOS.
IF YOUR BOOT-SECTOR IS FRIED, USE SBM...
in operating system installation, the HDD space is first partitioned.
Then, filesystems (C: D: E: drives), are created within those partitions.
But there's a hidden part right at the beginning of the HDD.
This is the boot sector which lists the starting address of each partition.
when the computer is switched on or reset, the bios queries the boot sector to locate the BOOTABLE partition and the system files therein.
If your boot sector is scrambled, it can be rewritten no probs but in the mean-time, download 'smart boot manager' (SBM). Make the floppy and boot from that. you will be presented with a list of available partitions. choose one to boot from.
REMEMBER, IF AN OLD LAPTOP SEEMS TRULY SCREWED, PUT THE HDD IN A MORE MODERN LAPTOP, BOOT WITH A LINUX LIVE CD (i recommend puppy linux--choose option XVESA), AND RESCUE YOUR PERSONAL STUFF ONTO A BLANK CD/DVD/USB.

Double check to make sure there is no floppy disk or CD-ROM disk inserted when you boot. If there is definitely no floppy or CD, your hard drive may have crashed or been corrupted. You can try installing Windows again, but it might not work if your hard drive is faulty. If it's faulty, you'll need to head to the local computer repair shop or have a geek friend help get and install a new one, then reinstall Windows.

Plz check the hard disk cable if its ok then your hard disk may be bad.
