Question about HP Compaq FP 7317 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Flickering Monitor I have a 3 yr old compaq system with an FP7317 LCD monitor. Recently it has started flickering colors from purple and blue to orange at times. It is an on and off problem and doesn't do it all the time. What might be causing this? Is there a possibility my monitor is going out?

My LCD monitor has columns of regularly spaced, flickering red dots, across the screen. It only appears on dark backgrounds and some web pages.

I have upgraded drivers on the FP7371 and the ATI video card.

    No improvement.

My FP 7317 LCD has red flickering spots in regularly spaced columns right across the screen. Updating drivers has not helped. They show up most on the desktop and some dark web pages, some times.

Dear Thunderforce -

I've run across this issue quite a few times with LCDs, and generally there are two possible causes: Either the Power Supply is bad(best case), or the LCD's Inverter is bad(worst case). Most LCDs now use a standard computer/monitor power supply - usually a thick cable, with three prongs on the male end and three slots or holes on the female end, same as would be used to give power to the computer. If you have an extra cable, you should try testing it with the LCD. If the screen works, fantastic, chalk it up to a broken power supply.

Otherwise, you'ld have to open up the display to replace the Inverter board. The LCD will have three or more circuit boards in its casing; One that handles input, one that handles power, ocasionally a separate board for video logic, and a slim board that connects the other PCBs to the screen itself. This slim board is the Inverter, and will have to be replaced.

The issue at this point is cost of repair vs. cost of replacement. An LCD inverter can cost anywhere from 40-140 bucks(on average) even on Ebay. Most big-name computer stores offer a comparable LCD for around the same price after rebates, or on sale. Second hand, I've even seen a few 17" LCDs for as low as fifty bucks.

Hope this helps!

How do i fix a flickering screen problem of my HP Compaq 6735s laptop

The flickering could be a sign that your lcd screen is going bad and needs to be replaced. It could also be the video card inside the computer. Isolate the problem by connecting another monitor to the laptop. Borrow a monitor from a neighbor, friend, relative or co-worker and connect it to the laptop. If the Borrowed monitor displays ok without flickering, then your video card inside the computer is good, but your lcd screen is bad. If the Borrowed monitor flickers like your lcd screen did, then your video card inside the computer is bad.

Plug in an external monitor and see if the display shows up on it. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If so that proves your video card is ok. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

Try tapping the back of the lcd screen's lid to see if the flickering stops, increases or decreases. It might be that the lcd cable located at the top on the back of the lcd screen is loose.Isolate the problem by connecting another monitor to the computer. You'll have to take the lcd apart to get to the video cable on the back of it.

mdumaran, You will not fix this problem. Here are your alternatives going from high to low in cost. 1. Trade in for NEW! 2. Check with compaq about a refurbished unit of same model. This will be cash+your old unit and they send you a Refurbished one. 3. Contract local tech to do the work. 4. You repair unit with information you get by viewing video clips at YOUTUBE dealing with "LCD monitor disassembly" and LCD monitor repair" Research #4 first!!! Then you will understand 1,2,3 above! The longer video cilps are very helpful indeed. Then, if need be get back to fixya for some additional help and info. Flickering monitor

Flickering screen display

Flickering on the screen can be caused by defective hardware in the computer or by improperly installed software, but it can also be caused by interference from external devices. The following examples describe situations in which your screen could start flickering:
  • Screen starts flickering because of interference caused by devices which generate magnetic fields, for instance:
    • a TV set
    • a laser printer
    • another monitor
    • fluorescent lights
    • hidden power lines
  • Apart from interference, an incorrect setting in your system CMOS setup can also cause flickering. On some systems it is possible to distinguish between interlaced and non-interlaced monitors. The setup of your system should always be colour non-interlaced.
  • Proximity to the monitor of fans, air-conditioning units or other devices with rotating motors.
  • The number of devices using power from the same electrical line. Are you overloading the plug?
  • Monitor placed on an unstable surface.
  • Improper video drivers, this is a software problem, see section B
  • An improperly configured or a defective video card.
