Lenovo 3000 N100 power failure

Hello thinstatic, No extended warranty and this is happening to two levono pc that I bought two weeks apart. Levono saying that this problem never occured before. No spill, drop, etc. it just started doing this problem maybe a month apart. One PC was bought for my dad and other for cousing, different household. kinda strange to happen at the same time and being bought about the same time. Is it hard to do what you suggested to do? I have multy meter (Fluke meter) that I use for home purpose.

Yes to all, same store (Circuit City)and about the same time. SAme model. Store is deniying the possibility. Not an expert.
Can you suggest a laptop expert in Los Angeles California, that is reasonable in cost and trust worthy like yourself

  • Radalin538 Jun 11, 2008

You have address to your repair shop? Any friends here in Los Angeles that you recommend. Just a high school student here. Not much money. Any suggestion to help me battle (to tell) Levono tomorrow. Thank you in advance

The laptop (3000- N100) is getting power but will not turn on, the half moon is flashing, I pushed the Fn key thinking it would take it out of hibernation. No avail.

This happened when the battery ran out and didn't get it plugged into the AC fast enough.

I have a total blank screen. Please assist.

    Thank you.

I also have exactly the same problem in my lenovo 3000 N100. When I switched it on after two days (it had shut down without a problem) nothing was happening except a blinking signal and no sound/ display at all.

I am living in Saudi Arabia. A technician has diagnosed to replace the motherboard. Cost of motherboard in the agency is little less than price of a new laptop. Please suggest if your problem is solved. my e-mail address is masoodbokhari@hotmail.com

My computer will turn on and run for about 2 minutes and then will shut off. It does the same thing with two different batteries and a new power chord.

I troubleshot my problem. and this is what I did.

I "overdischarged" the battery.

I took the battery out of the laptop, wiped it down with a clean DRY cloth, blew on the connectors, to eliminate any dust, etc.

Put battery back into the laptop, plugged in the AC adapter let charge for over an hour.

surprise, !!! it all started working again. ;-)

It is odd that its happening with two different systems...a couple of things to consider: Were they purchased at the same store? Are they the same motherboard roll out(Intel CPU in both, or AMD CPU in both, same features?), are the manufacturer's model numbers identical?(The systems should have a label on the bottom that states a more specific model number). If these systems were purchased from the same store, or even just close to the same time, its possible its a bad shipment of systems, or something occurred within the dealer's store that caused the issue. If at all possible, you might contact the store and see if anyone else has reported the same issue.

While its not terribly difficult to diagnose a power issue by testing the motherboard with a multimeter, I can only recommend trying it if you have experience in PCB, electronics, or laptop repair - there are a whole list of things that can go wrong in the process.

An alternative may be to take one of the systems to a computer repair shop to have it diagnosed; Might be costly, but worth it.

In all honesty, laptop repair isn't cheap no matter where you go. I'll advise against the bigger stores - Frye's, Best Buy/Geek Squad and the like - they tend to overcharge for what they do. If you have the opportunity to drive north a bit, I worked for a while at a computer repair business in Oxnard called MVP Computers; A little pricey, but definitely worth it. Otherwise, small computer shops are the way to go. You might also take a look in the Services Offered section of craigslist.org - There's always a lot of underrated tech talent looking for work; in fact I advertise a lot there myself, just a few counties north of ya.

If you do go with a repair shop, let me know what the specific cause turned out to be - it'd be great to know for future reference.

MVP is located at 916 N. Rice Ave, suite F, in Oxnard. Unfortunately, I don't have many acquaintences in the LA area, but I can say there's an ITT Tech in Oxnard(My Alma Mater), with many students eager to get their hands dirty, and probably a few willing to travel a bit.

A suggestion with Lenovo - go through the basic troubleshooting with the first technician you speak to, but eventually they will try to pass it off as an NOP issue(Not Our Problem). When you feel like you're about to get the bum's rush, ask to speak with a second level technician.

I need a user manual for a Levono ThinkPad T420. Where can I download a free one?

For T420 model Lenovo doesn't call it "User Manual" instead calls it "Hardware Maintenance Manual".
Here's a link to that manual:

Lenovo 3000 Notebooks : N100 Power Failure!

Radalin -
I've done a lot of laptop repair, and have run into similar issues with various laptops. What you've described sounds to me like a problem in the power circuit on the motherboard. There are a number of things that can cause this, and, generally, none of them are an easy fix - blown capacitor, bad power IC, bridged leads on a relay. If you have any experience working with integrated circuits, you can always test the power loop on the laptop with a multimeter. However, you may want to look into obtaining a warranty repair, or purchasing an extended warranty so that you can get a warranty repair; if there has been no user error(i.e. fluids spilled on the computer, dropped computer, left in excessive heat or humidity), then its a factory defect on the motherboard.

Hope this helps!
