Tried to upgrade my Dell Ipower from vista to windows 7 and get unsuccessful message. Should I try a complete install?

A complete install is better usually than an upgrade anyways as it will give a 'cleaner' start to your new Operating System. Just remember if you do a clean install there is an option to delete what is current on the hard drive and start from scratch. If you have personal files on your machine this will delete all those files/pictures/music. Windows 7 does allow an option to install fresh but not delete what is on the drive. If you are worried about your files I would try this method.

Buy a new disk-drive (your current disk-drive probably is a few years old, and probably the warranty on the disk-drive has expired. So, it's good "preventative maintenance" to replace it before it "dies".)

Disconnect the old disk-drive.
Connect the new disk-drive.
Re-install Windows.
Re-install anti-virus software (or pick a different one, since your current one "failed" to protect you).
Re-install programs (Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, WinAmp).
Reconnect the old disk-drive as a "slave" drive.
Copy all your files from the "old" disk to the "new" disk.
Virus-scan the "old" disk.

Eventually, "wipe" the old disk, and then, once a week, copy all your files from the "new" disk to the "old" disk, to create a good "second" copy of all your files, to protect you, should your "new" disk-drive suddenly fail.

When opening uploaded video AVI file all I get is sound, no pic

That sounds like you don't have the proper codec to play AVI files. Even if you haven't had problems with AVI's before these files may be DIVX avi's instead of the usual Xvid. Download the full codec pack here: and install it. Restart your computer and try again and you shouldn't have any problems.
Please rate, thanks!

Blank screen and being kicked out of word

Dell always provides System recovery with every PC,so you just copy all your personal files into external storage, then give system recovery, all the programs installed will get erased and then you install Microsoft office again. If they have provided you Vista DVD,then its better to format your PC,after copying files seperately.

No sound since installing xp

Unfortunately your best bet on your Inspriron 531s is to go back to Vista. According to Dell, this system was specifically setup to run Vista and, therefore, no XP drivers are guaranteed to work on this model. Most of the time for onboard devices, if they are not listed on the site, they are usually native to the operating system and do not require a driver download. Dell does, however, have some XP drivers for this model listed on their support site here

The only audio driver listed is for a Creative Labs X-Fi sound card and I am not sure that is what you have. Your best bet is to uninstall your sound card drivers, reboot, then install these. Good Luck
