After the basics (cleaning the lens, replacing the batteries, etc.), try dropping the camera on a carpeted area from about 2-3 feet. It worked for my Fuji A500 and 90% of the responders on the link. Everything on the web said it would cost ~$100 to fix. I was in the process of researching new cameras to buy and had nothing to lose by dropping it on the floor.
The error may be caused by debris in the zoom mechanism preventing it from working. Dropping the camera loosens the debris and voila!

Jolson -

The error indicates a problem with the motor that controls focus extension. I would lean toward grit or dirt blocking the threads on the focus track - it got gummed up. If the camera is still under warranty, contact the store you purchased it from, or Fujifilm directly, and obtain a Return or RMA. If the camera is NOT under warranty, you can try cleaning it - shut it off, pull out the battery, unplug any cables connected to it, pull out the memory card(if present). Get a soft bristled toothbrush and some rubbing alcohol, and VERY GENTLY brush a bit of alcohol into the seam where the focal arm retreats into the camera. The intention is to get just a little bit of that isopropyl into the focus motor, where it can break up any dirt that may be stuck in the threads. Most important, however - don't get the alcohol on the lense, as it will be very difficult to clean off, and DO NOT plug in the battery or power supply until you've given the camera sufficient time to dry; Isopropyl evaporates quickly, but to be safe, give it AT LEAST twenty minutes to dry.

Hope this helps!

I have a zoom error. When I turn on camera it just opens and shuts. What should I do?

Hi,
This error indicate that focusing ring got stuck or jammed. What you can try to do is spray some compressed AIR into the lens to try to free up any sand or dust that may have worked its way in. If that doesn't help, you can gently bump the camera to try to free the focusing ring.

or.......
You can try to turn camera ON at the table (facing it to the ceiling), don't put camera down face to the floor when opening.
Else your camera need to be disassembled to get at the focusing ring at Service Center.
Good luck and have a nice day.
Rating the solution is highly appreciated.

My Finepix 12.0 megapixels camera is having a problem

The focus mechanism is jammed inside the lens. The lens will not retract if any of the slide rings inside the lens are out of alignment.
Read my tips page on my profile under "the only way I know how" for focus, zoom error.
If you can't free it from the out side then you have to open it up and reset it.
my email is on my tips page if I can be of any more help

Zoom error showing on display screen of my daughters fuji finepix f40fd digital camera. Unable to press button to take photos and when I try to turn camera off the zoom lens goes in and out twice before...

The lens Is trying to close properly but the focus mechanism has a problem, most likely jammed, so the lens cannot correctly close or work properly.
It will need to be opened up and reset.
Please email me. My email address is listed in my tips section on my profile.

My daughter has a fuji finepix S5200 with the focus error on the screen. Can this be repaired resonably or is it just a paperweight now?

According to the manual, you should turn the camera on again, taking care not to touch the lens. It also says to turn the camera off and on again. If the message still appears, it says to contact your Fuji dealer. I'm sure you've already tried turning it off and on. Hope this helps maybe. Good luck.

FOCUS ERROR

I also had this problem. When starting the focus error alert came. Trying to move the focus button also triggered this. When I turned it off, the lens did not pull back. After being close to trowing it away, I used a little bit more force than before and turned the lens manually. I heard a click, and than it worked again. PS: Follow this tip on your own risk.....

Fuji finepix A600 camera - Zoom error

I had the same problem turn up after a few weeks. When I used the zoom button, the lens pushed out again and the camera worked normally for that time. I had to go through that procedure every time I turned the camera on.
I then sent it back on warranty and they replaced the lens assembly as well as the mode dial knob etc.
This camera has a 3 year warranty.
good luck...

Zoom lens won't retract

Usually down to the lens block assy being faulty. Is the lens retracting and opening properly?.It usually turns out to be worn gears in the lens drive assy or the result of a fall.Either way will be expensive repair! My advise is check and see whether camera is covered by insurance for accidental knocks.,
