Lenovo 3000 Notebooks : N100 Power Failure!

Have a N100 notebook and battery does not recharge and now runs on AC power but would shut off by itself very shortly after switching it on. Brought a new AC adapter and battery straight from the lenovo website, received it, but did not solve the problem. I called lenovo directly they are not sure what could be the cause of the problem. They never heard of this problem. Laptop is only a year or so old, and only use couple hours a day. Wondering if anyone have the same problem and had it resolve, I would appreciate any insights you can offer. Thank you in advance for you help!

I have the same problem it is so annoying I turn the computer on and it shuts off randomly. It makes a strange sound when it shuts off kind of a click. the amount of time it stays on is completely random and I know its not over heating because the computer is always cold or room temperature never hot. my battery won't charge at all. I'm on power cord number 4 or 5 and the last one caught fire. they won't give me a new one though cause my warranty is up. this is battery number 2. my problem is very frustrating. I can never figure out what is wrong. I'm thinking I want to buy a different power cord from another company if there is one because maybe it will last longer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Radalin -
I've done a lot of laptop repair, and have run into similar issues with various laptops. What you've described sounds to me like a problem in the power circuit on the motherboard. There are a number of things that can cause this, and, generally, none of them are an easy fix - blown capacitor, bad power IC, bridged leads on a relay. If you have any experience working with integrated circuits, you can always test the power loop on the laptop with a multimeter. However, you may want to look into obtaining a warranty repair, or purchasing an extended warranty so that you can get a warranty repair; if there has been no user error(i.e. fluids spilled on the computer, dropped computer, left in excessive heat or humidity), then its a factory defect on the motherboard.

Hope this helps!

Lenovo 3000 N100 vista 64-bit problem

I don't follow your assumption. Not unless you didn't have Vista 64-bit originally, and have installed it.

Driver: Small piece of software that allows the Operating System, to communicate with a device

However;

My thinking is the laptop is dirty inside.

Air cools the hardware components inside the laptop.
The cooling fan draws air from the Bottom of the laptop.
Dust, dirt, hair, lint, food crumbs,....you name it; is drawn in.

The Processor and graphics chipset, are the two hardware components that give off the most heat.
When a Processor overheats, it turns off. (BIOS turns it off)
This is a fail safe feature built in.
Keeps the Processor from burning up.

ALL power removed, (AC adapter {Charger}, and Battery), and blow-ing air in the intake port, (Fan opening), will NOT repair.
At most it is a temporary repair. Kind of like putting a Bandaid on a hole in a dam.

Laptop needs to be partially disassembled, and Q-tips, soft small brush, (Old makeup brush?), plus a can of compressed air for computers; needs to be used.

Also remove the Ram Memory module/s ('Stick'), and clean the gold plated contact pins, with a pencil eraser. Use air to remove the eraser dust, reinstall.

Welcome to Fixya!

You can run the computer by just using the power adapter. Take out the battery and turn on the computer just using the power adapter. If the computer wont turn on then possible problem would be the power adapter itself or the socket where you connected the power adapter to your computer.
You need to send the computer to Lenovo depot repair center for repair. You may try to use other lenovo adapters just to check if the adapter is the problem.

Thank you for using Fixya!

the battery casing itself is heat sealed....
You Need to Pry it open..
No Really easy way to do it and you must take your time and do it slowly, start at a corner edge using a guitar pick or similar... then work your way around and around till you can pry it open..
Not an easy task.. But Do-able..

Lenovo N100 does not switch to battery power

Batteries have a memory,

When the battery was new it most likely would run for 1.5 hours, but, since you didn't want the computer to go off, and you were by a plug-in, you plugged it in before it was completely or maybe sometimes not even halfway discharged. That is where it stated its "memory" - this got shorter and shorter = your battery "THINKS" it is totally discharged and reads as so.

There are programs on the web (can't advertize for pay programs or give you links to them - against the rules) - that will re-vitalize your battery to almost new condition by discharging it more and more till it is truly fully discharged, then will fill it back to like new charge time.

Or you can buy a new battery.

Will not boot up or turn on though it is getting power

The Charger could be bad, Try replacing that, or let charge, then try to turn on. The laptop might not boot with AC power. kinda stupid but maybe. If that doesn't work, the AC adapter is bad.
