Dbx 231 will not turn on. No power

Assuming the cord is well seated and has power, the power supply has likely failed. Take it in for repair or repair yourself. The power supply is VERY simple. Here is a schematic close to your unit:

The power supply is on page 15 and consists of a simple bridge rectifier, filter and two three terminal regulators that generate +/- 15 volts. Any competent electronics person should be able to repair this.

PS36K power supply overload problem

Most of Pyramid's supplies are based on the LM723 voltage regulator. The DATASHEET should tell you most of what you'll need to know to repair it. THIS is the schematic diagram.

If the output voltage drives the voltmeter to the end of the scale, it likely has one or more shorted power transistors.

No Power

Power supply problems are a good possibility. If you have a DC voltmeter, you could check the outputs. In standby mode, you should see at least a +5 volt supply. This standby line is necessary to power the logic circuitry, particularly the microprocessor. In the full on mode (VCR power on), other voltages should be present in addition to the +5. You should see a +12-14 volt, (powers the capstan, video drum, & other motors if present, & possibly a supply for the LCD display of somewhere around -35 volts. A common cause for a non-working power supply in early VCRS ('80s & early '90s), such as Panasonic manufactured rigs, is defective electrolytic capacitors used to filter the above noted supplies, especially the in the +5 & +12 volt lines. Sometimes a capacitor in the primary side of the supply will go bad, causing the dead symptom. Obviously, a schematic is beneficial especially if you are a novice. If by chance bad electrolytics are the cause, and you wish to repair it, I'd suggest using capacitors designed for these switching power supplies, such as the Panasonic FC series available from Digi-Key and other suppliers. If by chance you do have one of these early rigs, these were excellent units. Most early VCRs were made like tanks, very unlike the "made to break" junkers of the last 10+ years.

Dvd player is completely dead.

First thing to check is the power cord with it unpluged. Do you get a resistance there or is it open?? If its no reading at all then the power transformer or fuse or current limiter resistor is open. If you do get a reading then you know your power transformer primary is good. Next measure the AC volts comming from the secondary of the transformer. AC volts? Good! Now Find pin 1 or the end pins on the microprocessor. 5 volts present?? No theres your problem get a schematic and troubleshoot the power supply. Yes 5 volts? Measure the display any volts on it?? Ok im sure by now your gonna say no to one of these and like I said get a schematic and conferm all the voltages are present in the power supply. Most common dead problem in dvd/cd players is the power supply ie transformer, regulator, ic, ect, ect. Good Luck
