Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

Set up wireless router to laptop

I have DSL connected to my desktop. I purchased a laptop last week that I wish to tap into the DSL wirelessly.
I purchased the Linksys WRT54G wirelss router on recommendation of the salesperson at BestBuy.
I have attempted the "easy" setup provided on the disk that came with the Linksys router. I have followed the directions very carefully numerous times and when it gets to what I assume is near the end, the laptop set up gives an error that an internet connection cannot be found.
Can anyone offer any assistance with this issue?
Thank you
Kathy

You Internet access is through the cable or DSL modem.
Connect your wireless router to the cable or DSL modem and then configure the wireless router with the wireless encryption settings. I have just purchased a Toshiba Sattlelite laptop computer and bought the router. My problem is i dont know how to get the router connected to my laptop. I have a desktop and dsl modem but not sure how...

Theencryption key secures your data from unauthorized access. The router's password is a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA orWPA2 encryption key. The Passphrase generates the WEP or WPA or WPA2 encryptionkey and this is in the router's wireless settings. To connect to your wireless router, it needs the router'swireless settings configured ie SSID, WPA or WPA2 encryption key and also thewireless cards in all the laptops and or computers needs to be configured withthese router's wireless settings. Then the laptops and desktop computers cancommunicate with your wireless router.

I have verizon dsl and I want to setup my laptop to the wireless connection.

You'll need to purchase a wireless router first.. Your DSL( phone) line will plug into that ( make sure you tell the sales person what you are trying to do and who your internet provider is" verizon") and they should be able to assist you in selecting the right router. Once you have a wireless router operational, follow the directions that came with your laptop as well as the router for setting up a wireless network in your home..

Okay so if I understand your question....your desktop has DSL and you want to connect your laptop to the same DSL connection? If that is the case then what you need is a router. A router will share the DSL connection between the desktop and the laptop. A wireless router will allow your laptop to surf wirelessly if it has a wireless adapter or you can plug it into the ethernet port on the laptop. You can purchase one here. The instructions are pretty simple and straightforward and should be included with the router.
