The first step is to make sure you have good batteries in the remote. The ones included tends to be cheap and you have no idea how old they are. Here is the manual, page 12 explains how to use the remote and the next few pages cover the initial setup and scanning of channels. http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/file/download/resource/file/23089/39al900a%20owner's%20manual.pdf
If the remote is still not working, get a universal remote to replace it. This link gets you the codes to program the universal to work with your TV. http://codesforuniversalremotes.com/universal-remote-control-codes-toshiba-tvs/
How old are the batteries in the remotes? The on/off signal from the remote is the same. There is some lattitude in the IR reciever module for what it accepts. Low battereis may be shifting the signal's frequency or light intensity enough for it to not be recognized.
If sunlight is failing on the sensor or the remote's IR emitter, that can cause interference. Other IR devices can also interfere with the IR signal such as a "Remote Extender" being used for something else.
It may sound odd, but if your remote was working one day and not the next- was the room rearranged? If so, look around for possible sources of interference blocking the beam from the remote, or shining or reflecting light onto the IR reciever module in the set.
This tv is a Analoge tv.Only can be able to used with CABLE,SATALITES or some other pay tv services to able to get a picture. Can't used the alone trying to recieving the DTV free AIR signal, will not work.Only way to get free AIR DTV to work for this tv is.This tv must have a Digital Coverter box hook up.The free AIR broadcasting signal must go through the tv Digital Converter box to be able to watch Free AIR DTV channels broadcasting.
