Replace coolant temperature sensor and go from there!! here are a few causes for engine back fires--common causes are==lean misfire due to low fuel pressure or restricted injectors. breakdown of secondary including internal ignition, coil arching and a dead spot in throttle position sensor. it is hard to say with out being there!! but my first guess would be to check out tps first. then go from there. have a good day!!

Sounds like you have a bad ign. module. When the engine is cold moisture causes the miss and when the engine warms the module shorts out all together.

when's the last time you did a full tune up? (air and fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor) or could be a number of things. i would look at the temp sensor. i believe when they fail, they peg out all the way cold or all the way hot. so your car thinks it is still cold, when you have reached operating temps, causeing your misfire. good-day !

1992 olds 88 stalls. after it sits for a half

Is the Service Engine Soon (or Check Engine) light illuminated on the instrument panel? If so, then have someone pull the codes and post them back here. Autozone will do this for you at no cost.Caution: don't purchase any parts after reading the codes on their recommendation! If no codes, then suspect either a bad crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor. There are other possibilities too, but these are primary. I have seen MANY bad crank sensors do exactly what your describe without setting a code.

Replace the acceleration pump. It's a small diaphragm on the carburator, near the fuel line. Usually less than $10.
