Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

"Video in the PAL broadcast standard is not supported"

This is the message I get when I try to play any BlueRay disc in my new PS3, including the sample disc that comes with the unit. I thought I had a bad unit and returned it, now the second unit I bought gives the same message. What am I doing wrong?

This has now happened with 3 separate PS3's, all purchased at Best Buy the same day, all unable to play the demo BlueRay disc that comes with it. No clue what's going on.

"Video in the PAL broadcast standard is not supported."

I have tried other BlueRay discs that I bought at Best Buy in the US as well as standard DVD's and none of them work - I get the same error message. The TV that I'm using is a 3-year old Phillips LCD which I don't see why it would not work with the blue ray discs.

Games play fine through the PS3, so I truly don't understand why movies won't. (on 3 separate units)

Hey DLRIII,

One of the most common reasons why you might receive this kind of message is if you are attempting to use a PAL (European) disc in an NTSC-formatted (North American or Japanese) Playstation 3.

To my knowledge though, Sony has not made any kind of statement indicating that North American PS3's may have been accidentally packaged with PAL-formatted or incorrect regional demo discs. Additionally, many demo discs may typically contain both NTSC and PAL-formatted promotional material.

There are a couple of things you might want to try before seeking additional assistance through Sony.

First, I'd suggest testing other DVD/Blu-ray discs from your collection that were purchased within the U.S. or Canada in the PS3. If these discs function properly, you most likely aren't looking at a hardware problem with the PS3 itself.

You may wish to then check out the TV where you currently have the PS3 connected. If that TV is not able to support video in the PAL broadcasting standard, this may also be a reason why you are receiving this error message. Many older or analog TV's that are only NTSC-compliant will not be able to recognize a PAL-formatted signal sent by any external device (DVD player, video game console, etc.), and could possibly result in a similar error message being displayed. The best way to test this is to try connecting your PS3 to a different TV, preferably one that was purchased within the past few years and has an internal digital (ATSC) receiver.

Hope this helps you out.

Sincerely,
Aaron

Ps3 player wont play blueray discs says needs up date

I don't believe there is an update that will make the Blueray stop reading, or start working. Your disk drive might be bad and needs to be replaced.

Why wont my PS3 play any blueray games or movies?

Try using a lens cleaning disc. If that doesn't help your PS3's disc drive is probably dying. Time to call Sony support...

Won't play a blue ray disc

The blueray eye is out. You will need a new blueray player. The only problem with that is the ps3 will only respond with the orginal parts it came with. ( i.e. motherboard blueray player ) So the best bet is to buy a broken blueray player and take the eye out and replace it with yours just the eye not the whole thing.

I have had my ps3 80gb for a couple of years now but have never tried to play a blueray disc untill today. An on screen message states that I must renew the encryption key. Perform a system software update...

You will not be able to play some newer disc because of the technology embedded in them. The updates allow for those necessary files to be implemented into your system giving it the ability to play games and blu rays. Get your system updated.

Download the firmware from the playstation official website onto a usb

stick. Follow the instructions on the website at: www.playstation.com (the update will be at the bottom of the page, on the right side.)

Ps3 plays DVD and Blueray just fine, but will not play game discs... can't seem to read them. discs are in perfect condition, tried several different discs, no luck.

Some time when that happens the system configuration is wrong reset the configuration to game play on. That should let you play Movies and game. But!, make sure you remove the disk.

Boots up fine but wont play blueray disc or games

Your console is either dirty inside or your laser eye reader has gone bad. It cost me $140 to get mine fixed with the same problem.Try blowing it out or getting a cleaning disc.

Ps3 is playing blueray dvds etc but not loading or playing ps3 games have ryed the cleaning disc for instead console and also cleaning all discs and nothing

This can be caused by a dirty laser in the drive. Try cleaning the laser with a q-tip and alcohol. If this does not fix the problem, the laser may need to be replaced. Contact Sony and see if the unit is still under warranty.

My ps3 games will not play at all will play bluerays but will not recognise any game at all

Laser is bad in the drive which is why it will recognize bluerays but not games. Laser requires different strengths to read certain discs and if the laser is weak in any way then it won't be able to read certain discs. You can get new lasers on Ebay or even replace the whole drive which you can get on Ebay as well.
