Question about Amana Refrigerators

1 Answer

My Amana side-by-side does not cool enough. It seems blower keep running. I put the control knob at highest, but still cannot make ice. To make ice freezer should be atleast 12F to get the cycle started. Any suggestion. Refrigerator temp is about 45F, which is slightly higher. Any help, what could be wrong? 27 cubic ft model sxd27q2w

I have owners manual (1994), cannot find the location of it on page 33 where entire picture of each part listed.Doesn't mention thermosate in troubleshoot pages

  • pramod22 Jun 11, 2008

I know how to replace such parts as long as I can find it without much trouble. I fixed my gas furnace, water heater, cloth dryer, washer and many other items. I need to get the exact location of thermostate. I have volt meter etc.

you wil probably need to change the thermostat of ur unit.

  • dewan nafees ahmed Jun 11, 2008

    on side of the unit.

    very simply.
need to detatch it from your unit carefully.

then order the same from shop.
then replace it and connect it to ur unit again.

but see to that you perform this only with a prior knowledge of electrical and electronics.
else there is a risk of shock,

    be careful.

Amana PTAC PTH093E Fan runs at single speed only regardless of setting-auto/low/high Hot or cool air is coming out so compressor/heat coil is working. Reset unit and replaced fan motor-no change.

I've replaced many Amanda control boards. They have micro relays attached to the board. These relays are about a half inch by 1 inch in size, and control line voltage to the compressor and blower motor, and give up quite often. Its probably the board if its a digital controlled board. If it has manual, turn to select, type knob, it will be in that fan section knob. Hope this helps!

Yes, the client is keeping the unit on too cold. In my opinion, this design is wrong, wrong, wrong. When a user is not cool enough they turn the unit colder, and cause this icing up.
The best design keeps the evaporator coils above freezing at all times, automatically. Users have no idea and really cannot be expected to understand this issue.

Cars did the same thing (even Mercedes), and it is just nuts. If I was in your position, I would seek to have amana make a modification kit that would sense the evaporator temperature and interrupt the compressor until the temperature rises enough to keep icing under control. Under that scenario, max is max, period, but the unit will put out cold at all times, rather than icing up.

I have an Amana BX21VW refrigerator and both the freezer and refrigerator stopped cooling. The fan is still going and there is power, but no cooling of any kind. What is going on?

Hi!!

Check

Temp. control knobs,

Most likely, the evaporator coil is covered w/ice, obstructin the air flow thru it and to the fridge side of the unit.

Remove freezer back panel (where the little fan is) and check for iced evaporator coil, if so, unplug unit and use a heat gun or hair dryer to melt ice, make sure all ice is melted andthe air duct going to the fridge is clear.

Once this is done, restart unit and set temp. 1/3 of the dial, ie. if the dial goes from 0-9, set it on 3. wait 24 hrs to make adjustments

Ice maker not working. refrigerator is freezing everything. seems to run all the time.Help!!!!!! It is an Amana about 10 yrs old.

if you have the settings correct then the cold control(ref setting) is bad. but some older models use a baffling system which confuse some people. the freezer settind turned to the lowest setting make you fridge colder. when you put the freezer on the highest setting it allows less airflow. which in turn keeps ref warmer.

Freezer is cold but not keeping icecream frozen.

If, the fresh food section is 34- 38 degrees, then the freezer should be cold enough to keep ice cream solid. All of the cooling capability comes from the freezer section. I, personally, would not waste time or money on a ten year old box. Ten years ago it cost $1000, so, the outlay is $100 per year. Dump the old refrigerator and get a new one.

I have an Amanda side by side, the fridge temp

Look in the freezer side for a ice buildup on the back wall.
Ice= defrost parts issue.
Check the fan in the freezer. Is it running?
Not running? Could be a defrost thermostat issue or a bad fan motor.

After cleaning coils and in back of fridge, it appears that the defrost keeps cycling every 5 minutes

hi
Step 1:
If the compressor runs all the time, turn the control knob to the OFF position. If the compressor still runs, unplug the unit, then pull off the control knob and remove the screws holding the thermostat in place. Pull out the thermostat and remove either the red or the blue wire from its terminal. Plug in the unit. If the compressor doesn't run, the thermostat is faulty. Replace it with a new thermostat.

Step 2:
If the compressor runs after the wire is removed from its terminal, there is probably a short circuit somewhere in the unit's wiring. In this case, don't try to fix the problem yourself; call a professional service person.

Step 3:
If the refrigerator or freezer runs but the box doesn't cool, unplug the unit and remove the thermostat with a screwdriver. Disconnect both wires from the thermostat. Tape the ends of the wires together with electrical tape, and plug in the appliance. If the refrigerator starts and runs normally, the thermostat is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type. Connect the new thermostat the same way the old one was connected.

Step 4:
If the freezer compartment is normal but the refrigerator box doesn't cool, set the dials that control both compartments to mid-range. Remove these knobs (they're usually friction-fit). Then unscrew the temperature control housing; you'll see an air duct near the control. Replace the knob on the freezer thermostat and turn the control to the OFF position. Open the refrigerator door and look closely at the air duct. If this duct doesn't open wider in about ten minutes, the control is faulty. Replace the control with a new one of the same type. Connect the new control the same way the old one was connected.

Amana Refer. runs all the time.

Have you ever cleaned the condenser coil in the back or under the bottom of the refrigerator. Dirty coil will cause this problem, also make sure the little fan motor in the back is working if it stops you can get the same condition. If not these two conditions you may be starting to have a refrigerant problem.
The unit gets low on refrigerant and just dosen't cool properly.

Amana bottom freezer

Hello ghilitho, what you are having is an issue with the defrost cycle. There are 3 parts to this, heater, thermosat, and timer. Sometimes on the newer units the timer is the electronic control. What you are seeing is after you defrost the unit, it works for a time, this is because the evap fan pushes the air thru the unit. With the evap coil froze solid, the cooling drops. You will need a ohm meter to check the heater and thermosat, the heater & thermosat should show to be closed. Also make sure if this unit has a over heat thermosat that it is closed. It may have open up. If all this is good, then the timer is the issue. Hope this helps

Mullion heater connection for Amana 84" Integrated bottom mount refer model B136CAR3 mfg P1318402W. I need to hook up the mullion heater that is under the freezer, component P/N 12401301. But I cannot find the mullion heater connection point. According to the specs it's installed in the foam and not wired from the factory and is for service purposes. The reason for this is that the water from the defrost cycle re-freezes and clogs the drain hole. Eventually the ice gets almost an inch thick and it's SOLID. The freezer drawer cannot open, so I have to thaw it all out and pry it open. I've done this dozens of times over the years! The service tech never figured it out. But with help of my boat-refer-expert brother we found the solution at the high level. Devil is in the details. According to the instructions: make a slit and peel back the white vinyl harness sleeve that goes to the water valve, pull out two wires (black and white) that aren't connected to anything (yet). Then "locate the mullion heater leads at the left side of the cabinet and connect to the back and white leads". Then Wrap vinyl sleeve with electrical tape to seal the slit. OOOOOKAY.... I found the unconnected leads in the harness that goes to the ice maker water valve. They have male bullet style plugs and clips (a little corroded) but I cannot find anywhere to connect them... Is left side of the cabinet as viewed from the front or back? The main harness is on the left rear area. And if I make the slit long enough (which is very difficult, then the wires could make it back there. If I only could find where the mullion heater's connectors come out. Of course the wiring diagram only shows the mullion wiring as optional and not connected to anything. I really do not want to lay this 500lb (at least) beast on it's side. It already fell on me and my daughter, but a countertop and pallets save us. This refer has been nothing but a pain to deal with ever since I bought in 2001. I don't want to get rid of it, since it has custom wood panels that go with our kitchen, and I fell on hard times (due to illness) and cannot afford a new one. It fixed many things on it already. Such as the problem where the relays weren't soldered properly onto the main logic board, which fixed the non-defrosting problem and the freezer fan not working. But now the drain hole plugs with ice. So I read that many freezers have a 5W to 20W heater that runs all the time to keep the hole from freezing. Especially if water gets in the insulation under the floor of the freezer. Anyway, can anyone tell me how to find the connections to the mullion heater? Is it in the outside-rear channel up back of the refer? it's pop-riveted on. Thanks! Scott
