Sounds like the disc transport(motor) or controller may be bad.
After the standard of unplug, wait, and try again, I think contacting a reputable repair center would be the next logical step.
Cost may outpace the value of the player, as many repair facilities want $60,00 as a base fee + parts. How much would it cost to replace the DVD player? >Costs have come down for all but the most esoteric models.

I put a dvd in but the system is not reading it. i've tried other dvds and tried all 5 disc changers, but my system is still not reading any dvds. what is wrong?

Hi, what makes the DVD not to be able to read the inserted DVD's is because the lens of the player is too weak to spin the dvd plate to play.

You will need to use a DVD Lens cleaner to clean up the lens inside the player to clean up dirt disturbing it from not playing any DVD cd.

If after cleaning the Lens and still does not play, you will need to replace the Lens..

DVD PLAYER REPAIR (NO DISC ERROR)

Before you attempt to repair your DVD Player yourself, make sure that you have necessary tools and test instruments like philips screw drivers, multimeter, soldering iron, soldering lead, soldering pump, etc...

jdvillanueva_27.jpg

This is a DVD/MIDI Player with a "no disc error" upon loading any disc that played before...
Watch this VIDEO
First I've loaded it with disc and observe the movement of the optical lens and the spindle motor. First thing I've noticed that the spindle motor didn't oscillate upon spinning and it's spin slowly unlike the normal RPM...
I've suspected the spindle motor was already bad but still to be confirm...

jdvillanueva_28.jpg

jdvillanueva_29.jpg

Unscrew the disc holder plate from the assembly to keep away the magnet touching the spindle motor, this may affect the reading and spinning of the motor upon testing with the multimeter.

jdvillanueva_30.jpg

This is how it looks like after removing the disc plate holder in the assembly. Spindle motor is secured with 2 small screws in the lens assembly.
Pull-out the connectors from the main board to see the underside of the tray.

jdvillanueva_31.jpg

You may test the spindle motor with your multimeter set in resistance measurement (ohms X1) even connected to the small board.
Bad motor will read either less than 5ohms(shorted winding) or infinity (open winding) and will not spin.
Good motor will read more than 50 ohms(depends the size) and will spin upon testing. Watch this VIDEO.

jdvillanueva_32.jpg

jdvillanueva_33.jpg

Onced you've confirmed that the motor was already faulty, unscrew it from the lens assembly.

jdvillanueva_34.jpg

Replaced the spindle motor with new one. Before you install the new motor make sure that the clearance of the disc holder is the same as the old one. Compare first the clearance because if it is to high the optical lens will not read the disc same if it is to low....

After replacing the motor re-insert all the connectors to the main board.
I've load same disc which does not read a while ago and observe what will happen. Observe the disc and the sound oscillation from the spindle motor in this VIDEO.

Hope that the above information, pictures, and video will help you fixing your DVD player yourself.
Thanks for visiting Fixya.
Have a nice day!

Problems with you DVDR 3380 not finding your DVD

As this recorder get older and with frequent use it will sometimes not be able to spin the DVD if it can't do this the play head will just move up and down until the DVD starts to spin. If it doesn't start then you will receive the error UNKNOWN DISC. You will no that this is the error you have as you will hear the DVD player clunking every 2 seconds as the head tries to read the DVD.

This actually means the a drive motor is not able to overcome the spindle and DVD weight combined it really does need a new motor fitting.

8cc320c.jpg

If you can't afford a new player remove the top drill a small hole about the size of pen top just above the white spindle top (drill anywhere SHOWN IN RED) and replace the top,now when the DVD player has trouble give it a nudge with a plastic pen top I use a biro lid and this will tease the spindle to start moving just enough to overcome the inertia

NOTE: this is a temporary fix but it really does work and if you think that this is a bit drastic then look underneath there is a 1/2 " slotted hole near the front that is the manual release from the tray if it gets stuck and they put this in and its been there probably without you even knowing.!!

Doesn't read disc

Glenn's answer is incomplete. I have the same machine. I am currently experiencing a similar problem. The machine reads cd's, vcd's, but it will not read dvd's. Commercially purchased dvd's. The problem is not a format problem, not a zone problem. The dvd's work in other machines, so it is not a dvd problem. If anyone has any ideas, please respond. Thank you.

FAILURE TO READ DISCS. TECHNICS SL-DV280 (SC-DV280)

if the disc starts to rotate when helped by hand then you definately have a weak spindle motor. dvds spin faster than cds which gives more wear & tear to the motor. i've repaired these faults numerous times. hope this helps?

Place DVD in any slot and it says "reading disc" then "no disc"

When you get no disk error, that is usually because of a problem with the optical laser lens that is dirty, faulty or opaque, and will start operating on certain disks better than others.

In that case you will hear disk spinning, whirring and clicking, but the TOC (table of content track at start of CD/DVD will not be read, therefore the error.

Whe this problem is starting you may be able to read only CD, DVD or Blue ray, or for example only DVD-R and not +R , or only to read and not to write and so on. After more prolonged usage , often the unit goes losing the rest of functions, and ends up not reading anything at all.

If instead there is no noise, and disk does not spin at all , then there is a faulty motor, or the motor micro-switch is bad. This situation is far less common than the lens problem.

Try first using a CD/DVD or Blue ray lens cleaner disk to clean the lens. If that does not work you will need to disassemble the drive , and clean lens directly with q tips and isopropyl alcohol, or to replace the CD/DVD lens, or the whole drive unit.

Sa-mt1, picture freeze after ab 50 min-1h,than stops;

First of all,if you are using rental dvds, there might be scratch which your dvd player might have an issue to read it;however,if you have tried many dvds in this player and you are having this issue, it is time to move on to another dvd player.
I recommend a Pioneer dvd player.
