I just purchased a refurbished Garmin 330 unit. I am trying to use the unit for the first time, but no matter what I enter, it says I'm in Kansas and gives me directions from Kansas to the location I entered. When i try to set a new home address it ignores it or gives me directions from Kansas to Minnesota (Where I actually am.) I tried to reset the unit by taking off the face plate and pressing the rest button. I also downloaded the update and updated the unit. Am i doing something wrong?

Re: New Garmin 330 stuck on kansas
Take the unit outside and turn it on. Then select View Maps, at the top of the screen it will say either "Locating satellites" or "Acquiring Satellites". Once the garmin has locked onto the overhead satellites, then it will say "Ready to Navigate".
Locating Satellites take longer than Acquiring Satellites.

Try connecting in your car and leave it on and let it charge while you are driving it may eventually find the satellite, it probably remembers the last satellite it found which was in Kansas. You may not be getting a signal where your are right now so run some errands and leave it connected in your car. You can also go to the garmin web site and try updating the unit. You will need a usb cable and will need to install garmin updater. Make sure the unit is fully charged. If this does not work you can call garmin and they are usually very helpful. Here is the garmin link which will help answer some more questions. http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/support/
Let me know what solved the problem. thanks for using fixya
Kansas is the default location when the unit comes from the factory or when a factory reset has been made. You haven't mentioned the model you have. Have you opened the antenna and let it acquire a satellite lock? Without a lock it has no way to know where you are.
In order to use the C330 in foreign countries, you need to purchase the maps for those countries and insert the SD card into your unit. You will then have to select the proper maps to use on the unit. These maps are available for purchase at www.garmin.com.
As far as getting around closed roads, your unit will automatically recalculate your route if you are unable to take the suggested route. You can purchase updated maps, but I do not believe this will help you will roads closed for repair.
It is unclear what you are trying to load from the Garmin site to your unit. If you are trying to update the software in your unit, it must be the EXACT model otherwise it will not work, and could render your unit useless.
If you are trying to update your maps on your unit, you will need to contact Garmin to purchase an update code.
You will have to leave the unit out in the open so it can 'see' the satellites. It might need from 20-30 minutes to acclimatize itself to the new location. It is set at Kansas because that's where the manufacturer is, so that is the last recorded satellite signal.
I got stuck in Kansas also. But, now I'm not in Kansas anymore! Are you trying to set your Garmin up indoors? That was my first problem. Go outdoors and try it. I did that and Toto and I were still in Kansas. SO, I pluged it inot my cigarette lighter and drove down my driveway. It took a few minutes for Garmin to locate a satalite, but once it did I was all set. No problems since, hope it works for you. I really enjoy using my Garmin. I'm one who ofter ends up on the road less traveled so, Garmin has come to my rescue a few times already. Have fun and say hello to the Wizard of Oz for me!
first turn it on and let the unit acquire satellites to find your home state. Then you can set up your address as your "home location". When I first set it up, I was able to pick up the satellites in my bedroom (scary....)...everything worked just fine.
