my cd rom wont read anything

the cd rom drive wont recognize cds or dvds. and it doesnt show up in my computer and the hardware manager says "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)"

it started with my drive not being able to burn CDs, but now it's gotten to the point where it just won't recognize them either!

Similar problem. No recent system errors, but I haven't used the drive much, so not sure when this problem arose. Non-functioning seems to be mostly on DVD playback. Can put in a CD/CD-R/CD-RW and all is well, but with a DVD in the drive, it just reads for a couple minutes but never autoplays or registers anything in the drive.

I tried installing the HP Firmware update sp30367, but like the earlier poster, had no success. Only have the grayed out "FlashUp" button, and no change in behavior.

    Any tips?

Sounds as though you may need to reinstall the driver for the laptop's cdrom drive. The easiest way I've found to do this is to download it directly from the manufacturer's web site; In your case, look here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-31831-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=435618&os=228&lang=en

Download the file to your desktop (file name is sp30367.exe), and run the installation to reinstall & update the DVD/CD-ROM drivers.

Hope this helps!

Risk of losing data by re-booting CD-ROM recovery disk

Copy off your data to another computer before recovering. A recovery usually restores to factory settings and loses all data.
You could boot to Ubuntu or Linux and copy your stuff that way, then when restored, copy it back.

D:/ is not accessible. Disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.

You may have simply 'cooked' the DVD drive and the motherboard on it fried. Replacement drives start at 20 quid for a desktop and 30 quid for a laptop. It's held in with 1 screw if a laptop. Remove the drive, get the model number and replace it.

Cannot open cd-rom drive!

The thing about cd/dvd drives in general is that they die and thats the case here even if you deleted anything of the operating system its self would notice that the cd drive was missing the driver and ask you about it since you havent stated that its safe to say that the drive is dead

My HP notebook will not recognize dvd-r disk

It's pointing towards a hardware problem. You can try updating your drive's firmware.

Check HP's support page to see if they have one available.

If not you can check the device manager details of your drive and find one floating around the net, I'm sure.
