If you plugged the wrong power cord into it, it could have damaged the power supply in the drive. You may have to get it repaired.

My Maxtor Onetouch 4 500gb external hard drive is not working, the light does not come on any more as if there is no power. When I tried a universal power cord the light blinks really fast, but my computer...

First thing you need to do is to confirm your Power supply is working, i think its a 12 volt adaptor so check wattage rating and then try to power a router or a device that uses the same voltage and wattage with it, an easier way is to check whether the light blinks once very fast right when you stick the adaptor into the external HD's back, if it does, download hyrens Boot CD from thepiratebay.org and burn it to CD...Most of the tools on Hyrens boot CD work in DOS but a limited amount works in windows, try booting into windows and try using the partition recovery tools like undelete etc, if this does not work you will have to take the actual HD out from the case by dissassembling it and then plug the actual HD without the case straight into your pc via sata cable, restart your pc and instead of booting windows boot the hyrens boot CD Menu, now use the partition and HD checking tools, this should work, if it does not, your HD is irreparably damaged and you might need to mail it to data recovery experts to get your original data back, Hope this helps..

ou have a usb controller board that is malfunctioning and it or the case for the usb hard drive needs to be replaced.
the power regulator that is built into the usb controller is not working therefore the usb logic circuit cannot transmit the signal to the PC viia the USB port and will not recognize the device. You can order or purchase a new case that will accommodate the hard drive from your local computer store.

Maxtor personal storage 3200 - flashing green light.

Solution:
First, disconnect the power cable from the back of the external hard drive:
If the power supply LED continues to blink:
  1. Connect the power supply to a different outlet (or instead of connecting to a power strip, connect directly to an outlet in the wall).

  2. If the power supply continues to blink after changing outlets, this indicates that the power supply is defective and needs to be replaced.

  3. If the power supply stays solid, then reconnect to the external hard drive and see if the drive spins.

Maxtor One Touch 4 won't open

Hi, Generally one of three things will have happened, They damaged the cord, broke the connector inside the drive or they shorted the board by bending the connector. In the first case you can replace the AC adapter. In the other two cases it's not generally worth repairing due to cost. You can try locating a connector with the same voltage amperage and polarity to test the drive but you simplest solution in all three cases is simply to purchase a new enclosure at the local PC store and have the techs put the harddrive from the maxtor enclosure in the new case for testing(about $40). If this works you're done. If not the short may have damaged the cicuit board on the HDD. If the drive itself is damaged and you need the files that are on it you will need the help of a pro. Try the above suggestion and comment back here as to your results, if you need a pro, include your country and city in the comment and I will make an appropriate recommendation. Chris

Maxtor 3200 power indicator lights but computer won't recognize

ooooh, that sucks.

I assume you have tried unplugging it and plugging it back in?
Have you tried to see if it will work on a different computer?

I hop you had it all backed up.
If nobody else's suggestion beat mine...then I give you 2 options.
You have to take it apart (might have to break the shell, since most aren't designed to be user friendly), once you have the actual hard drive out of its housing, open up the side of your computer, and hook it up.
it will have to diferent connection points. One will be power (thats the plug that has (i believe) 4 pins in it...hook that up so your drive has power...the other plug is for data (read/write), its either a sata or ide (depending on how they (maxtor) made it). I assume you dont know what sata or ide is...just google pics it...once you see a picture...you'll know.

anywho, once its hooked up...start you computer back up (FYI, when you do this 'operation', shutdown your pc...and then unplug it)
once you have it all done and loaded back into windows, it should automatically detect it (give it a few minutes).

that scenerio I just laid out for you, is assuming its anything but a hard drive issue.

if it is indeed a hard drive issue....then apart from sending to to some VEEEERY expensive palce that could extract the data for you. theres only one more option. Put the hard drive in the freezer for several hours, then take it back out and hook it up to you computer, if it detects it...move fast, and start transfering all your files off it...cause now its living on borrowed time.

the reason this works **sometimes**, is because of the hard drives heat, its its platter actually expands over time a (very very very tiny bit), enough to mess it up, and when its chillin in your frezzer, the platters contract a little bit...making you able to get your data back...hopefully.

hope all goes well.

WD Notebook Hard disk power problem

The power cord connects to a little circuit board inside the case, and the hard drive itself connects to the board. I would think that if you damaged anything it would be the board but not the drive. You could try taking the drive out of the case and connecting it directly to your computer (or you could get a computer shop or computer geek friend to do it if you don't feel up to it). If the drive itself isn't damaged you will be able to read your data.

Try to remove the drive and connect it directly to another computer.
If still doesn't spin up then most likely the board has failed.

Flashing green power light

I'm not 100% sure it's the issue, but it sounds like you shorted the board. I just had this problem because I accidentally plugged an identical looking power supply from another drive into my Seagate. But the voltage on the two power supplies were wired differently and they'll both plug into to the same jack. Why they do this I have no clue, it's confusing, damaging and possibly dangerous.

Anyway, I took one of my other drives out of its casing, unhooked it from the IDE (40 pin) and Molex (4 pin) connectors and replaced it with the other one. It wasn't even made by the same company (replaced a Seagate with a Western Digital) and it wasn't even the same interface (firewire on the Seagate and USB on the WD). It worked like a charm. I know very little about this stuff, so granted, I thought it was risky... but as long as your drive has the same voltage/amp rating as the board (check the power supplies and sides of the drive inside the casing), you should be all set to make the switch. I checked and all mine require the same amount of power, and I don't think that's a coincidence. Unless you're working with a big raid array or a larger drive, I'd expect yours to as well.

If you don't have a second HD, I would suggest maybe purchasing a cheap one just for the board at least to salvage your data.
