If the display on the external monitor is fine in that case it is an issue with the LCD as you get a video output on external monitor
you have to get the LCD either repaired or replaced.

I have the same problem. I have to connect my laptop to an external and reinstall the ATI drivers, shutdown, disconnect the power cable, pull out the battery, put the battery back in and reboot.
It's not a hardware problem, it's a software problem. Do not replace your screen. It will cost more than your laptop is worth.
Now if somebody has a real solution, that would be great. Thanks.

I have the same problem and same computer IBM t43. How do I link to an external monitor. Can I just use an old lap top and a cable?
