I have a Photosmart C4280 & I can scan in a document & save it as .pdf But what I want to do is make a file like I receive from others...where there are numerous pages in the drawer & when you send it as an e mail attachment it goes as just one file... rather than me attaching each pdf image individually
Can you instruct me
You are probably referring to a .zip file. If you are sending multiple PDF files sellect all of them (press control to highly more than one file) and then right click. Highlight "Send To" from the menu that appears and then click on Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a zip file that contains all the the PDF (or any other) files.

Might need a bit more information about this: But I'm presuming you scan your document and save it as a pdf document using the built in HP software?
Couple of things to try:
1 - have you got the latest version of Adobe Reader? It may be that you are using an older version - the pdf document specification has been updated over the years and it may be that you're saving the pdf using a newer version of the pdf format than adobe reader is able to read.
2 - Adobe reader isn't the only pdf viewer, there are numerous other pdf document viewers (some free some not) You could try another pdf viewer, like Foxit Reader (free to use) and see if that can open it?
3 - When you save the scan, make sure that in the Save Dialog box it is really saving it as pdf. Common mistake is that people often just save a file with .pdf and expect the program to know that you want to save as pdf. When you scan there are several other file formats that you can use (Tiff, Jpeg etc) Is is possible you're saving the file as Tiff or Jpeg but with a .pdf file extension? If you're not sure, re-scan the document and resave it, but don't use a file extension, let the scanning program do that, see what it saves it as?
4 - check where you're saving the pdf on your computer? Is the place you're trying to open it from, the same as the place you've saved it?
Go to scanner icon and right click mouse on it and change the scanned file form JPEG to pdf. When you scan multiple documents, it will save in one file alone no matter how many document you are scanning.
1. Open the HP Solution Center
2. Click Scan Document
3. Document to PDF File
4. Change Settings
5. Save to File Save Options
6. Make sure One file per scanned page is not checked.
7. Click, OK > Scan
8. Ofter first page is scanned, position next page on scanner, then click Add Page.
9. Keep doing step 8 until all pages scanned.
10. Click Finish.
To scan documents, you must choose the PDF scan. Need to figure out how to choose to scan as a PDF. That's in the software or scan buttons. In that setting, there should be a choice of single or multiple scans. After the scans, you choose finish and the program should show you a PDF document and then save to a folder of your choice.
Scanning a multi-page document as a .pdf file reverts the settings for rotation, selected area, etc. to default for any pages after the first page. This applies to Mac OSX 10.3, 10.4, & 10.5. A simple, but tedious work-around is to scan each page as a separate file and easily recombine them using OSX Preview. Just open the first page, view the Sidebar, and drag-drop the additional page files into the sidebar. Save and it's all one multi-page .pdf.
