Depends on the brand. always post brand and model #.
if it is a whirlpool or kenmore the idler pulley will be laying in the bottom of dryer. the belt should have come with instructions as to how to loop it around motor pulley and Idler.

How do I put the belt on?

You must get the front panel off to install the belt on all American dryers. Some have small access panels to fit the Idler. Most dryers you start by either raising the top or removing the top first. Then you can get the front panel off. Then you can remove the drum and clean er up. Lots of videos showing belt replacement are on you tube.

Dryer stopped working?

  1. From the top of the dryer, remove the lint trap. Using your screwdriver, unscrew the assembly that houses the lint screen and remove it from the dryer, setting it aside.
  2. Using your screwdriver as a lever, insert it under the front right side of the dryer, between the top and the body. Press down to force the top slightly up from the body. Repeat this process on the left side, and lift the top off the dryer.
  3. Remove the lower panel from the dryer by inserting the screwdriver into each side and rotating to release the clips that hold it in place. Slide your phone book under the now-exposed dryer drum so that the drum will be supported.
  4. Loosen the screws at the bottom of the front cover, but do not remove them (this allows access to the belt without requiring you to remove and replace the entire front cover). Move to the top of the dryer, and remove the screws holding the front of the dryer in place. (These will be located at the top, behind the front.) Tip the cover toward you, exposing the drum, and slip the broken belt off the drum without fully removing. Slip the new belt over the drum, and lift up on the drum while returning the cover to the closed position. Replace the screws to the front cover and tighten the lower screws. Remove your phone book from its position under the drum.
  5. Check the rear drum seal to the back of the dryer, and position the new belt identical to the old, with the textured side facing down.
  6. Directing your attention to the motor area, remove the old belt and feed the new belt through, passing the entire belt, doubled over, under the idler pulley. Push the belt toward the motor pulley, placing the belt around it, and allow the tension to release on the idler pulley.
  7. With your hand inside the dryer drum, rotate the drum counterclockwise to ensure that the belt has been properly installed. Replace the top of the dryer, exerting downward pressure for a snug fit, followed by replacing the lint screen assembly, and the lint trap, and then replacing the lower front cover.
  8. Run the dryer for several minutes to ensure that the dryer is operational and that you have installed your belt correctly.

I need to change the belt for my Kehmore Series 80 dryer

HI. this guide will help you replace this worn belt. make sure you have safely unplugged this unit before initiating this procedure.

1 From the top of the dryer, remove the lint trap. Using your screwdriver, unscrew the assembly that houses the lint screen and remove it from the dryer, setting it aside.

2 Using your screwdriver as a lever, insert it under the front right side of the dryer, between the top and the body. Press down to force the top slightly up from the body. Repeat this process on the left side, and lift the top off the dryer.

3 Remove the lower panel from the dryer by inserting the screwdriver into each side and rotating to release the clips that hold it in place. Slide your phone book under the now-exposed dryer drum so that the drum will be supported.

4 Loosen the screws at the bottom of the front cover, but do not remove them (this allows access to the belt without requiring you to remove and replace the entire front cover).

5 Check the rear drum seal to the back of the dryer, and position the new belt identical to the old, with the textured side facing down.

6 Directing your attention to the motor area, remove the old belt and feed the new belt through, passing the entire belt, doubled over, under the idler pulley. Push the belt toward the motor pulley, placing the belt around it, and allow the tension to release on the idler pulley.

Replace the top of the dryer, exerting downward pressure for a snug fit, followed by replacing the lint screen assembly, and the lint trap, and then replacing the lower front cover.

8 Run the dryer for several minutes to ensure that the dryer is operational and that you have installed your belt correctly.

If you can hear/see the motor running, but the drum does not spin, you probably have a broken or loose dryer belt. You can easily determine this by opening the top panel and looking at the belt. Just lift the lint sheet cover on the top of the dryer and and pull out the screen. With the cover still open, locate and remove the two screws. Once the screws are removed, the top panel will lift up. The belt should be seen wrapped around the drum. If the belt has broken or has slipped off the idler pulley, it may be fitting loosely around the drum, or lying on the cabinet bottom. If so, the following instructions explain how to access the interior and replace or reinstall the belt. Replacing the dryer belt on this model dryer involves the following steps:

1. UNPLUG the dryer and remove the lint screen.
2. With the lint screen door open, remove the two screws and lift the top panel.
3. Unplug the door switch conector plug and any ground wire that may be installed on the casing.
4. Locate the two screws that hold the front panel in place. There should be one screw on each side in the cabinet interior.
5. With the door shut, lean against the front panel and remove the two screws that hold it in place. Once the screws are removed, grasp the front panel at the top center and lift straight up to remove.

You should now have complete access to the dryer interior. If the belt is broken, this may cause the idler pulley to come loose. This is normal with no tension on the pulley to hold it in place. To install a new belt and re-install the pulley, follow these steps:

1. Loop the drive belt around the dryer drum with the groove side facing the drum. (Try to line the belt up with the wear marks already on the drum from the previous belt).

2. With the tensioner in your left hand, insert the clip end of the idler pulley into the grooves on the dryer bottom casing with the idler wheel pointing to your left. (The grooves are directly in front of the drive motor.)

3. While holding the tensioner in place, insert the belt UNDER the wheel with your right hand and pull it up and over the drive motor pulley.

If this does not explain it well enough, you can also verify by going to repairclinic.com. Click on the Repair Help link and look for the "Dryer Belt Diagrams" link under the Special Features section on the next page. Look for Whirlpool and refer to diagram H.

Once you have the belt installed, re-install the dryer front panel by holding it as you did previously. Line up the holes on the inside bottom edge of the front panel with the small mounting cleats on the front edge of the side panels. This can be done by yourself, but an assist may make it easier. Once you have the front panel in place, lean against it to hold it in place and install the mounting screws. NOTE: Don't forget to reconnect the grounding wire and door switch connector plug. Without the door switch connected, the dryer will not run. Lower the top panel back in place and reinstall the two screws.

NOTE: Placing a piece of duct tape over the dryer vent chute will help safeguard against dropping anything down in the blower fan assembly. If you drop any screws down the chute, you will need to remove the dryer back panel to retrieve them.

If you still have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you. PS Appliancepartspros.com has some excellent exploded view diagrams of your dryer, along with parts listings that you cna use for reference as well.
