1. Log into the web-based configuration by opening up a web browser and typing in the IP address of the router (192.168.0.1).

2. The default username is admin (all lower case) and the password is blank (nothing). Click OK.

3. Click on the Home tab and then click Wireless on the left hand side.

4. Select WPA-PSK using the radio buttons.

5. Choose a key (password). The key is an alpha-numeric password between 8 and 63 characters long. The password can include symbols (!?*&_) and spaces. Make sure you enter this key exactly the same on all other wireless clients.

6. Click on the Apply button then click on the Continue button to save your settings.

Note: If you are configuring your router from a wireless adapter, you will lose connectivity as soon as you click Apply. You must enable WPA-PSK on your adapter and enter the same exact passphrase as you entered on your router.

My internet connection via the router (d-link DI-524) have slowed down. how do i reset settings or put a password?

Maybe you have an open WiFi (no password wireless) and anyboby near can connect to your router and download files, this can slow down your Internet connection. To put a password to your wireless network, enter setup preferably by a wired connection to router, in your browser type the default IP address of it (http://192.168.0.1), the user is admin and its password must be left blank (default settings), at the Home tab go directly to Wireless option since you'll only change your WiFi from unsecure to secure, there you can choose the security type, WPA is recommended, after select it you can put the new Key (password) of your WiFi, and finally apply to get changes working, just remember that after this procedure, you'll have to enter the password in each new wireless connection to your router.

WPA2 pre-share key must consist between 8 to 63 Ascii characters.

But you have spaces in the sentence the car is black.

Space is not a ascii character. Did you try without spaces?

Change from 'unsecure' to 'secure' router

You don't need to install anything extra to secure the network. It's a matter of changing router settings. You set up the router through your web browser by going to "http://192.168.0.1" which accesses the device's setup screens.

There are several revisions of this product. Here is the URL for D-Link's selection page for the router:

http://support.dlink.com/products/revision.asp?productid=di-524

Click on the picture that shows the version you have, and then you'll be taken to the page for that version. You can download a manual or look through the FAQ's which will guide you through the process of setting up the security.

New HP laptop will not connect to wireless secure network

Problem solved. I disabled the security on my network. I connected the new laptop to the unsecure network. I saved the settings on the laptop for the unsecure network. I rebooted the laptop. I re-enabled security on the router. I tried to connect to the network. I got an error on the laptop saying the network saved settings did not match. I modified the settings to a secure network on the laptop and saved the 128 bit key. Rebooted everything. All works fine now.

Can't get it setup to work without being plugged in to my laptop

If you have Windows XP and there's is no extra security set up on the router then connecting is easy.

In the bottom-right corner you'll see a small icon that looks like a computer. The screen is likely blue on it. Additionally there are two faint crescents near the top of the icon. That's the Wireless Zero-Configuration tool. If you double click on that icon a window will pop up showing the names of nearby connections, their signal strength, and whether or not security is enabled. By default the name of the DI-524 is "default." If it is not secured, click on on and then click the connect button. Windows may then ask if you want to connect to the unsecured network. Click on Connect Anyway and the configuration tool will connect you to the router.

Securing my wireless connection

Hi ladynb,

Open the DI-524 window by typing 192.168.0.1 into internet explorer address bar, and press enter.  Fill in your password, and press enter.  Click on the  Wireless button. This should open the Wireless Settings window for the 524.  Set SSID broadcast to  Enabled. Set Security to WEP.  Set Authentication to open system.  Set WEP Encryption to 64bit.   Set Type to HEX. Click and select radio button next to KEY1.  Enter a 10 digit number that you can remember, like 1234567890, or 1111122222.   Now click the Apply button at bottom of the screen.

Now any device that you wish to link  will will need to use this Key.   Scan for the router, connect and use Infrastructure mode, Type in the 10 digit number you were suppose to remember, and off you go.
