WHEN TYPING A HALF SPACE IS SKIPPED OCCASIONALLY AND WILL NOT CORRECT THE LETTER TYPED, IS THE LETTER WHEEL REPLACABLE?

To answer your question yes the print wheel can be changed, BUT that is not your problem. The machine needs to be reset or the reset tab needs adjusting.

Background;

When you turn on the machine the print head moves to the right side, the print wheel spins, and the ribbon jumps up and down, that is the machine resetting its self.

I would

  1. Power it off and then turn it back on and test to again.
  2. If it's still typing the wrong or unreadable letters then turn off the power open the lid. On the bottom of the case there is a metal frame on the right side of the frame you will see a small metal tab pointing towards the print head.
    1. (When the machine resets its self, it uses that tab as a reference.)
  3. That tab is easily bent which causes the reset to be wrong. Most people can bend it by hand, DON'T use a pliers! The tab can break off completely. It doesn

Letter bunch up when typing

Try a little WD40 on the silver shaft the carrier slides on, look for debris in the area below the carrier, turn it off and slide the carrier by hand feeling for anything binding.

I own an IBM QUIETWRITTER 8 and it stops typing after 25 to 75 key strokes. The red LIGHTS ON RIGHT SIDE LIGHT UP on SHIFT LOCK and LANG and goes BEEP, BEEP, etc. After I turn it off, and then turn it back...

I'm going to suggest that you get yourself a equivelent Wheelwriter as the Quietwriter hasen't been made in 10 years and the supplies are just about non existant and if you find them they will cost a small fortune. To repair it dosen't make sense as you will not be able to get supplies.
A really nice WW30 will give you many of the features of the QW for about 350.00.

IBM Quitewriter- beeps and does not work!

First try advamcing yhe ribbon and be sure the printhead id properly installed, lube the silver shaft that the carrier slides on with a little WD40. If you get it going the ribbons are no longer made and almost impossible to find.

IBM Selectric Typing carriage doesn't stop moving. Stuck key?

It sounds like a possible tab knockoff problem. This could be a small spring loose or broken in the escapement portion of the machine or the final knockoff in the tab unit out of alignment. You can try setting a tab before the end of the carriage by holding the carrier in place and using your other hand to press Tab Set, but the alignment may be just far enough off to keep you from actually setting the tab. One other thing that sometimes will cause the problem is the pitch setting lever is between the two pitches. Make sure your pitch setting lever is seated in its home position.
