Will not spin

I have taken the back of the machine off to check the belt. The belt appears to be good and tight. When I put it on spin cycle the motor does not turn.

Hi,
If it will turn freely by hand when the door is open, it could be that the motor brushes have worn out. Are there any blue lights flashing inside or underneath the machine when it turns or tries to turn, or is there a lot of black powder on the floor under the motor?
Those are signs of the brushes wearing out. They usually cost £5 to £15 depending on manufacturer and a "handyperson" can usually fit them without difficulty.

Hope this helps!
If it doesn't, please hold off the rating button and add a comment with more details so I can try to help you further.

The motor that makes the whole thing spin is old which has been used for countless times, making it sluggish/slow. That's what happened to mine, so I had a repair man and have him fix it. Mine just needed some lubricating, and it went back to normal. Can't say if the same would work for you, but nevertheless, have a repairman take a look.

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

If your washer is a front loader it MIGHT be that the belt is slipping, although I would expect it to slip more on the main wash spin cycle than the gentle spin cycle! Sorry to ask but are you sure that it doesn't spin as much on gentle as it used to?
Just in case it is a belt problem, here are my guidance notes on having it changed ;-0)
-----------------------------------------
Belts are not expensive- sorry I do not know how much yours would cost- and are easy to be changed by a competent person:-
REMOVE POWER FROM THE MACHINE AND REMOVE THE BACK.
The motor support bolts should be loosened and the old belt removed. Often putting the new belt on is a bit of a struggle, even with the motor 'loose', because it is new and smaller!
Once on it should be tensioned by pulling the motor against the belt firmly- but not over tight- and the motor support bolts tightened.
ON NO ACCOUNT SHOULD ANY FORM OF LEVERAGE BE USED TO TENSION THE BELT. THAT COULD LEAD TO DAMAGE TO THE BELT, MOTOR AND BEARINGS- EXPENSIVE!
If it turns out to be the motor, it is false economy to just have the brushes changed. Experience of others is that the brushes may only last months unless, that is, the motor is totally refurbished.
Hope this is your problem solved.
Good luck,
John C

My spin cycle doesn't remove all the water from the clothes so I have to run the spin cycle twice. Does this mean its probably the belt?

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

It depends on whether you think it is spinning at the right (fast) speed or not. Often if the wash and rinse cycles go OK but the spin does not it is the belt which is slipping.
Now- I do not know your particular machine, whether it is a front or top loader. I normally try and help with front loader problems!
Just in case it IS, what follows is my 'standard' document for the replacement of belts, copied and pasted 'cos it's quicker ;-0)

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France @ 14:37 Tue afternoon,

Although I do not know your particular machine-
in general it is always worthwhile purchasing a replacement belt because the old one is likely to come off yet again. In machines I have come across the motor is held in place by bolts which, when tight, 'clamp' the motor in position.
The bolts are loosened, the belt put on and then the belt tensioned by firmly adjusting the position of the motor so the belt is tight and the bolts tightened i.e. clamped
In your case, apart from using the old belt which must have come off for some good reason, it sounds as if the belt is not yet tensioned/clamped.

Have a good look at how the motor is mounted- how it can swivel on its mountings/bolts to tension the belt. The bolts will be tight- and should be when tightened!

Hope this helps,

John C

Motor runsbut drum very slow to spin in spin cycle

The motor could be on its last leg of working. You can also check to make sure that the belt is not binding against anything under the drum. You may also want to make sure that the conterbalance weight is not hitting the belt. Make sure that your machine is lever and that it does not walk during spining.

Washer belt is loose, & seem to slip at start of spin cycle.

there are several drive belts for this model... check here to see if the one you are fitting is the correct one... also,is the tensioner siezed? causing the tension to be too slack therefore allowing the belt to shred at speed?

HI The drive belt (or belts) of a washing machine may become worn or damaged, causing noisy operation or stopping the washer entirely. A damaged drive belt is easy to replace. Remove the back panel of the washer to gain access to the belt. To remove the belt:

Step 1: Loosen the bolt on the motor bracket and move the motor to put slack in the belt.

Step 2: Remove the old belt and stretch a new one into place on the pulleys.

Step 3: To put tension on the new belt, use a hammer handle or a short pry bar to push the motor into position while you tighten the bolt in the adjustable bracket. The belt should have about 1/2 inch deflection when you press on it at the center point, midway between the pulleys. If the belt is too loose, it will slip on the pulleys, causing the machine to malfunction. If the belt is too tight, it will wear very quickly and will probably become so hot that it will start to smoke or smell.

Loose pulleys can also cause problems. Most pulleys are fastened to shafts with setscrews around the hub of the pulley. These screws must be tight or else the pulley or belt will slip. The resulting malfunction may seem to be caused by a faulty motor, but it can be corrected by tightening the pulleys and adjusting the belt. For this reason, always check the belts and pulleys before working on the motor.

do you actually see the motor spinning? or think you hear it, check the belt hasn't come off, or gone slack, it needs to be fairly tight but not too tight, if the belt and pulley go round but the drum doesn't then you have serious damage and need a new inner drum hope i have helped and if i can help more get back to me, i am an appliance engineer of 20 years
