Question about Amana ARB8057CSR Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Lights are on but nothing else

Our Amana ARB 8057 CSR has iced up (badly) about 4 times over the last two years. By badly I mean that I had to slide the frig out to empty the water from the condensing tray (about three times) so that it wouldn't overflow while I defrosted it. Each time I attributed it to someone leaving the door open, because I would find it open. This last time I took the panel covering the coils off and there was snow from top to bottom, so I wondered if the defrost was working at all.
I checked the t-stat by throwing it in my other freezer(ok), hot wired the defrost(ok), and checked the timer by turning it to defrost (with the defroster element unplugged) and waiting. In about 35-40 minutes I heard the compressor kick on. I know that this didn't really check the whole timer operation (all the way around it's cycle) but I put it all back together and turned it on. I heard the compressor kick on and later when I returned (2hrs.) the frig and freezer were not cooling at all. The lights are on but nothing else is running. I pulled the timer back out and could hear and feel that it wasn't running. Checked for power and no power to timer. I took notes and plugged everything back in the way it came off.

I'm baffled. Any idea what I may have done to kill this thing?

Thanks, Jack

Checked the switch in the freezer and it was bad. Odd time for it to go out, but it was not working and it would work intermittently if you shook it.

Does high resistance (higher than manufacturer's rating) on the compressor windings means the compressor is bad?

usually it is about +- 10% outside of that range I wouldn't expect it to last. You never know it could last for years, but if it burning up starter relays or making a lot of noise it probally won't last long.

Freezer is fine fride does not work. the dooor was open all night amana arb 905

With the door being open so long all the excess moisture iced up the evaporator coil behind the rear panel inside the freezer blocking the air flow. When it automatically goes through a defrost cycle the ice will be melted. If you cant wait you can defrost it with a hairdryer if you remove the rear panel. It should defrost again in a day or two on it's own according to what type of timer you have. With the electronic models you can force a defrost. Look in the manual to see how to to this.

Saw your post a week late but the sound could be the start relay on compressor is weaking or if the water is turned off to ice maker the water control valve will try to fill ice maker if the ice make switch is left on and has no water. I will send a manual shortly, Sea Breeze

My model is ARB 1914 CC nine years old.

your "damper vent door" located between the refrigerator and freezer compartments is frozen open or the cold adjustment contron in the refrige is bad and not powering the door as you change the temp set for the refrige and leaving it open,if the door is frozen from ice/frost just de-ice it with a hair dryer and then set the temp adjust and see if it opens and closes with any adjustment

Amana Refrigerator Model # ARB 2214 CC with leaking ice maker

Good day,
If the fill pipe that fills the ice maker is in it's proper position, then it is a defective water fill valve located in the bottom rear of the machine.
After harvesting the cubes the ice maker mechanism continues to rotate and turns the water valve on for 7 seconds. If it does not shut off smartly then it can cause the well to overfill, and flow water into the bucket.
Do not let this go. A small leak could turn into a major overflow, even overnight causing serious problems to the machine and as I have seen the entire house.

Ice maker overfills and leaks into the ice bin.

I have had a similar problem several times. What I have found is that the ice tray coating has begun to flake off. Then, the ice sticks or partially dumps. Next more ice builds up and when the valve opens the water runs over the partially emptied tray and spills into the bin making "icebergs". The remedy is to replace the tray or if that is not possible, then, the whole icemaker. In fact, I have one down stairs to put in tomorrow. They don't seem to last more than about 4 years or so.

If the fill tube gets choked up with ice, (Figure S-4) it usually means that the water fill solenoid valve is leaking. The valve is not closing properly and is dribbling water. If the leakage is slow enough, water may freeze in the fill tube. Over time it will freeze the tube completely shut.
