Sandisk Cruzer Micro 8G has been working fine, suddenly is not recognized when inserted. Light sometimes comes on and stays on, sometimes comes on briefly then goes out. Have tried on three different PCs, a total of 7 different USB ports. Ports work fine for other devices. Cruzer Micro does not appear in Explorer, does not appear in disk manager. Am off to find a PC running Windows 98.

A lot of people (me included) seem to have a similar problem with this particular SanDisk model. The problem stems from the design of the drive: the slide that retracts and extends the connector (the silver piece that you plug into the computer) is easily damaged. If this happens, the connector won't extend completely and it can't get a solid connection to the USB port; without full contact, the drive won't be recognized by the computer and the device won't get enough power (this is why the LED won't light up, but the drive gets hot). The solution sounds a bit scary, but it's easy enough: GENTLY remove the drive's plastic casing (I pried mine open with a very thin screw driver). Hold the exposed drive by the edges, taking care to minimize contact with the now unprotected chip and hardware inside, and plug it in to a USB port. Mine lit up right away, and I was able to retreive the files and copy them on to a different, and hopefully more reliable drive.

Hope this helps.

I have Lenovo Ideapad S10-3s. I have changed the OS to WinXP SP3 from the earlier Win7 Starter. The whole thing is working fine. My External DVD burner i.e., Lenovo GP20N (suitable for Ideapad S10-3s) also...

Hi wsmurty,

I see that you are having issues regarding your External DVD drive, you also mentioned that the Operating system was down graded to WinXP SP3 from Win7 Starter.

  • If this only happen just a day ago or possibly just hours ago you can try doing a system restore on the machine, restore to an earlier date at least a day or two from the day that the DVD drive was not dected on the machine. if this does not work then try the steps below.
  • Check Device manager to see if there are any drivers that you may have missed out for the Lenovo System.
  • Possible Drivers that can cause your USB's not to detect the External DVD drive will be the chipset drivers.
  • Second Driver is the driver for your External DVD drive see if it is up to date or possible that it may needs updating on the case.
  • Is the External DVD detected in My Computer? If it is then Uninstalling and reinstalling the driver for your External DVD drive can be done just to check then update the driver for it if possible from the manufacturers website.
I hope that this helps.

Have a nice day,

I dont know why my external hard drive isnt showing up on my computer i think its lock, i dont know how it happen it was working fine a couple of days ago.

If the power light is on then I would get a new USB cable for it. If the power light is not on then you might need a new power cord.

My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive. I used just few days ago and connected the usb cable to my computer and the WD Passport drive and not recognized on my 2 laptop and 2 other...

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter ( and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.

USB not woking

Based on your post/description, your USB drive is faulty. You can try salvage/repair it but chances are all data/information would be lost. If Windows can't do anything try using HP's USB FlashDrive Utility. File name "cp006049.exe."  Do a Google, download, install and execute.

Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things went or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
