Power surge on USB port

The camera, an Pentax Optio S40, has worked fine for years. Now if I try to download the pictures on to a PC I get the error message "Power Surge on Hub Port, a USB device has exceeded the power limit.."
I tried the USB port in the rear of the PC hoping for more power, but no joy.

Disconnecting other USB devices does not work. I contacted Live support on pentax site and they said issue is fault in circuit card in camera which requires shipping back, and paying for repair. They knew right away what issue is, so probably fairly common.

Work around is to copy images from internal card to memory card and then just use a card reader to get pictures. Thats easier or at least cheaper then sending in for repair.

Camera cards are never to be formatted on the computer....only in the camera. "card error" usually always means you need to format the card in the camera. This will erase it so download any pics you want to save first.

This is usually because the USB cable is shorting. Looks like an issue with the internals of the camera

Lost software disc

there is two ways to load pictures from your cam to pc:
step 1
youll need a card reader to put in the memory card to a usb port.
A.then the computer will recognize the device as a FLASH DISK/ REMOVABLE DISK.
B.some pc will automatically open once you inserted the card reader to the usb port "click open containing folder". if the pc does not open automatically open my computer and find the "flash disk/removable disk" and click.
C.once inside find the DCIM folder this contains your pictures taken from your cam.
D. now you can choose a picture you like to be transfered or copy to your PC
E. save picture in a folder that you ca easily remember

step 2
need a usb wire to connect cam to usb port
A. attach wire from your cam to usb port/pc
B. your cam will show options choose storage data. the other options requires a software
C.same as step 1 from B-E

Power surge

Connect the camera whilst it is switched off....then when you power on...it will ask if you want to connect via PC or bridge....if that still throws up power surge...you need to use a different cable as the power ballast on the cable is faulty. It is much easier to just use a card reader....cheap off eBay.

Connecting OPtio S4i to PC

After formatting my PC to upgrade it I've been unable to install the USB driver software to save pictures from my Tentax OPtio S4i to my PC.

My computer isn't recognising my camera when I plug it into the USB port.

When I've tried to install the Driver using the disk I got with my camera, at the stage where it asks me to MODIFY REPAIR or REMOVE, the software I get the following showing up on display boxes:
