Windows XP: How to release and renew IP addresses

IP addresses can either be assigned manually or automatically. When they are assigned automatically, a DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server hands them out and determines which computer or other device gets which address. This process usually flows smoothly, but there are times when you may need to release or renew an IP address even when using DHCP.

There are several ways to release and renew IP addresses in Windows XP. Each procedure is described below.

From the system notification tray:

1. Right click on the network connection icon in the system notification tray.
2. Select Repair. Windows will automatically release the current IP address, reset the network connection, and request an IP address from the DHCP server. (The new IP address that gets assigned may be a different one from before, or it may be the same one.)

From the Start menu:

1. Click the Start button.
2. Right click on My Network Places.
3. Select Properties.
4. Right click on the network connection that is currently in use.
5. Select Repair. (If you choose a network connection that is not in use, Repair will be grayed out.)

For either of the above methods, you can release and renew your IP address manually by clicking Disable instead of Repair, and then right-clicking and choosing Enable.

From the command prompt:

1. Click the Start button.
2. Click Run.
3. Type "cmd" and press [Enter].
4. At the command line, type "ipconfig /release" and press [Enter].
5. Type "ipconfig /renew" and press [Enter].
6. Type "exit" and press [Enter].

Resolving 169.x.x.x IP address problems

This article outlines methods of resolving issues with a 169.x.x.x IP address. This address results from a built in feature of windows called automatic private IP address(APIPA). When your computer is unable to find a DHCP server the APIPA service will assign itself a 169.x.x.x IP address. According to Microsoft, the APIPA service checks for a DHCP server every five minutes.

Releasing the IP address
1. Click on Start and click Run.
2. Inside Run, type ipconfig /release to release the IP address.
3. Then after the IP address is released, type ipconfig /renew

Disabling the Ethernet Adapter
1. Click on Start and right click on My Computer. Then click on Manage.
2. Click on Device Manager and then Network Adapters
3. Under Network Adapters, right click on your Ethernet adapter and select Disable.
4. Wait approximately 5 seconds and right click on it and click Re-enable.
5. This restarts the DHCP client and tries to obtain an IP address from the Network.

Check the Ethernet cable
Sometimes a bad Ethernet cable can cause your system to receive a 169 IP address, try changing out the cable for a new one.
Disable antivirus and firewall applications
Disable/uninstall any external firewall, antivirus, or spyware programs (eg. Norton Internet Security, McAfee Security Center, Trend Micro 2007, Webroot).
Restarting the QoS packet scheduler Protocol
1. Click on Start and click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, double click on Network Connections and then Local Area Connection.
3. Click on Properties and uncheck QoS Packet Scheduler.
4. Click Ok and repeat the process.

Restarting the DHCP service
1. Click Start and select Run.
2. Type services.msc in Run and click Ok.
3. Find DHCP service and right click on it. Click on Stop.
4. Reboot the computer.
5. When the computer boots up, click Start and select Run
6. Inside Run, type the following: netsh int ip reset log.txt
7. Click Ok.

System Restore
1. Open Start and click on Programs and then Accessories.
2. Then click on System Tools.
3. Click on System Restore and select a restore point when you were not experiencing this problem.
4. Restore your system.

Connect two adsl router use static ip

you first have to do subnetting of the ip which you are using if you use VLSM much better because you will not waste any of the IP it uses /30 net mask which means only two host allows to conenct in that subnet range. then connect both routers via serial link give the ip address on serial link of both routers make sure you give clock rate on DCE cable both the the router's serial port ip on the same subnet. try this and it will solve your problem. let me know hpw did you go. thanks.

DNS Name resolution Between private & Public network.

You do not need to configure ISP's PTR records. Instead define their DNS addresses as forwarders in the properties of DNS server under forwarders tab and flush DNS cache.

Net connection

Hi there,

You can only use one connectionat the time!
Why?
Mahanagar telephone nlgam ltd. deliver anIP address,
Airtel deliver another IP address.

An IP address (ex. 88.135.232.12) is computer address, like you address (ex. 1234 flood st. Sidney NSW, Australia).

And like you and your addresses are two places intown, you can only bee at one address at the time.
And – then it is not the exact truth, but the other solutiondemands some expensive hardware for “bundling” the two connections.

How to improve my internet speed

hi Prem,

If you are using 256 Kbps broadband and you have installed 10 PC in ur network with Star topology then i dont think it shold be creating the problem. Star topology holds best compatibility in a small network.

The Problem would be causing because of your network card.
Network Card (NIC) plays most important role in ur network for transmitting and receiving data efficiently and fastly.

So you would need to check out for ur NIC card first i.e what catagory of NIC are u using?

You need to upgrade ur NIC in the server and also in ur client's PC.

Different catagory of NICs are-
1. 10 Mbps
2. 10/100 Mbps
3. 100 Mbps
It is recommended to use 100 Mbps NIC card for best performance in ur network. This will surely improve your net speed.

Another cause of ur slow speed is your broadband speed. If you have Cyber Cafe then you should upgrade with atleast of 512 Kbps of broadband speed in your network for better performance.
And use a good broadband service provider who are using good spectrum and bandwidth.
Like - Reliance, Airtel, Sify etc. (for India Only)

The given solution will defenately help you to improve your Network. e-mail me you acknowledgement on - rock_65@hotmail.com.
