Marco, There are several videos on Youtube on how to replace this laser. However, I would recommend to simply replace your whole system. but if your short on cash, like the rest of us, this will do the job. The model number is located on the back of your PS2. There should be no need for calibration as long as you follow the online instructions. Hope this helps.

That sounds like a damaged wire that may be grounding out when you close the tray. Do you have the larger (older) PS2 or the slim one?

Disk read error on slim ps2 scph 75003

hello pauldonp...if this is an early version of the slimline they had a problem with over voltage which inturn took out the laser.your only option may be to replace the laser . sony did bring out a mod for this..i preferr the real old version of the ps2 as they had all separate boards and if one went faulty you didnot have to replace the lot ,also the lasers were a lot cheaper than the later models .in the slim lines the lasers are not all that expensive .they do take a bit of setting up as you have to know the ohms setting on the laser for each model..hope this helps

Disc wont work

Hi AdalVI,

Your PS2 probably has a dirty laser lens. Below is a procedure for cleaning the lens on the big PS2. It does not work on the Slim PS2. Do not ever use alcohol on a slim PS2 laser lens.

I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.
  1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
  2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
  3. Remove all the screws.
  4. Remove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
  5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
  6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the Reset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
  7. Remove the CD tray lid.
  8. Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the CD area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
  9. Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
  10. Remove the little white disc from the CD tray lid.
  11. Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
  12. Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
  13. Put it back together, and you’re in business.
If you have trouble you can send your PS2 to a Repair shop. Click on "Repair Directory" at the bottom of this screen. then choose "Video Game Consoles". Then you pick a Good Repair shop. My shop is listed, but I cannot divulge the name in this forum. Cost will be $25 plus shipping. Shipping is usually $8.95 to the USA

Playstatiion 2 repair

Hi Jaybs,

The disc will not spin if the laser canot read the disc. you may have a dead laser or bad ribbon cable that runs from the Laser to the motherboard. I am posting a procedure to clean the lasers lens. I hope you do not have the Slim model, as this procedure is for the older Big size PS2. You do not use Alcohol on the lens of a Slim PS2 ,it tends to haze over the lens.

Disk wont spin

First of all the new laser lens will not allow your Slim to read NTSC UC games if you have a PAL european Console.

There is no reason the New laser should have not read the disc unless it Came to you damaged. It sounds like you know how to replace a laser.
