same problem.. i have the zrg though.. I am in the process of trying the defrosting thing right now. I don't quite understand how the freezer frosting turns off the refridgerator but we'll go with it and see what happens.

I just recently had this same problem. Check the back of the freezer, behind the white metal cover and see if the coils are frosted over. Sometimes you can just look through the slots to see if there is a large collection of frost.

If so, open the freezer door and look down to the extreme lower left on the front of the freezer. There will be a small tube with slots in it. Turn it clockwise until it clicks. This is the defrost timer. Wait a minute and see if you see steam or hear sizzling noises at the back of the freezer. If so, then your defrost element is indeed working.

The unit will defrost for about 25 minutes and it should be fine after that. If it does not defrost, then chances are your defrost heater element might be bad.

If the frost re-appears several days later then your defrost thermostat is bad and needs to be replaced (about $15), ( is one of the many places you can get another.

In my case, after the manual defrost the problem did not return. The ice-over was most likely cause by one of my kids leaving the freezer door ajar allowing moist air into the freezer.

Good luck

Sounds like you may have a defrost problem. Check your freezer section for frost buildup on the back wall of your freezer. I have no idea what service rates are in your area. It should be much more reasonable to repair than to replace. Parts may run between 15-50 dollars depending on the nature of which part(s) are affected.

Fridgidare, freezer cold fridge warm

sounds like you may have gotten a refridgerant leak causing a low charge condition. some refridgerators have a evaporator fan if this quit working it will cause it to freeze up .thus the freezer does not use a fan and it will still get cold

Fridge stopped working, freezer still works

Light going out is a separate problem. If the freezer is still working and the fan in the freezer operating check for frost on the back wall. If there is frost on the back wall you have a defrost system problem.
Possible open heater, bad timer, or defrost thermostat. If the freezer is not working check for power to it. Reset the breaker if necessary.
If the light went out because of some power loss the freezer would not be working.

Burnt smell inside freezer.

Generally speaking it is the refrigerator control that controls the compressor operation. Refrigerator is cooled by air from the freezer. When the refrigerator gets down to its designed temperature it shuts off the compressor. The freezer control determines how much air is allowed to flow into the refrigerator section and there-by controls the freezer temperature.
