It probably fell onto the headphone jack and something got messed up there. That's a problem that you could maybe fix by taking it apart and reseating the button actuator. If it fell onto the button, it may have pushed the actuator farther into the phone. The button pushes down on another button inside that is part of the actuator module, so may have been pushed around.

Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously
until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to

That should get rid of the freeze. If your unproperly disconnecting the ipod from your computer before the itunes sofware disconnects it for you, then that could be your problem with the freeze ups.
My camera fell out of my pocket book and busted the door. I glued it. that worked for about 6 months. I need the door for it and it will be as good as new.
Does you deck have the Ipod Ready function print on it? It might not come with the option. If it does then just take it to a local stereo shop for advice, it should not cost any money. Goodluck.
