I have Comcast cable and internet in the same line. My computer is upstairs which is connected to the internet. I want to set up my ps3 downstairs with the big screen tv, this is also where the cable/internet line comes into the house, now the problem, how do I attach the cable line to the ps3? Thanks

Re: How to wire a ps3
Hey allisc, In order to connect your PS3 to the internet, you will need one of two things: a hard-wired connection, or a wireless residential gateway. Please keep in mind that your options may be limited by the PS3 model that you own, and that a wireless connection is not possible with some models. The most straight-forward type of connection you can make is a hard-wired connection - simply use an Ethernet cable to connect your PS3 directly to your residential gateway. By establishing a direct connection, the PS3 should not need any additional information in order to access the internet. The trade-off for the simplicity of a hard-wired connection is that the number of places you can physically place the PS3 itself are limited by the length of Ethernet cable used. Should you wish to use a wireless connection instead, you will need to own a 40GB, 60GB or 80GB PS3 and a wireless residential gateway. The 20GB model unfortunately does not support wireless capabilities at this time. Please keep in mind that connecting wirelessly can often prove to be more complex than using a direct connection, as you not only need the name of your router, but information on any established security settings as well. The most common security settings that may be in place are Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) keys and Media Access Control (MAC) filters. MAC filters are essentially a series of "blacklists" and "whitelists" that restrict network access based on hardware configuration. WPA keys however, are "passwords" that allow your computer or video game console to decipher a code used by residential gateways which prevent unauthorized users from using your personal internet connection. Both forms of security may typically be set and changed by accessing the gateway directly through its default website. This default website can vary depending on the brand of the device, but many companies may use one of the two default addresses I've provided below: 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 Please keep in mind that in order to access the gateway's control panel you will need to have both the admin user name and password! Once you have gotten access to your residential gateway's control panel, you should then be able to add the MAC address of your PS3 to the gateway’s MAC filters, as well as copy down any WPA key used by the network so that you may later enter it into your PS3's memory. If you are still not sure how to proceed or do not feel comfortable doing any of this, I would strongly suggest contacting either your internet service provider (ISP) or a Geek Squad® agent at your local Best Buy™ store for further assistance. Hope this helps you out. Sincerely, Aaron Go Ahead. Use Us.

There are two ways to connect to the internet there is Wireless or Wired connection here is how to do both:WIRELESS (WIFI): Step 1: Turn on the PS3 Step 2: Once on main menu go to settings and under settings select "Network Settings" Step 3: Select "Internet connection settings" if prompted that you will be disconnected from the internet select "Yes". Step4: Select "Easy" on types of installation. Step 5: Select "Wireless" to choose what kind of internet connection you want. Step 6: Select "Scan" to search for internet access points. Step 7: Select your home connection when the screen comes up with all the found access points. If your home Internet access point requires a password enter the password when prompted and saveyour settings. Step 8: Test the connection to check if you configured your settings right if successful you are good to go. If not go back and check your connection settings for your home internet access point. You are now connected to the internet! HARDLINE (Wired): Must connect ethernet cable to PS3 before turning it on! Goes like this: Arrows are the cable (===>) Internet Line ===>Router ===>PS3 Step 1: Turn on the PS3 Step 2: Once on main menu go to settings and under settings select "Network Settings" Step 3: Go to "Internet Connection" and select it to Enable it. Step 4: Select "Internet Connection Settings" Step 5: Select "Internet connection settings" if prompted that you will be disconnected from the internet select "Yes". Step 6: Select "Easy" on types of installation. Step 7: PS3 will automatically check your connection network setup and set the settings for you. Step 8: The settings will appear and press x to save the settings. Step 9: Test your connection if it was successful you will see succeeded nest to "Obtain IPAddress" and "Internet Connection" you are now connected to the internet!
The network configuration and connection depends on the connection method and equipment you have.
Important: A router would be required if you want your PS3 and the computer to be connected to the internet at the same time.
The following are mandatory. You need:
An Internet connection
A cable modem
Ethernet cable. (Available with the PS3)
When you have a wired connection to the Internet, it is not necessary to adjust any of the default settings. (It is done automatically). If you aren't able to connect with the default settings, follow the instructions to adjust the settings.
Select "Network Settings" under "Settings" in the home menu, press the button.
Select "Internet Connection Settings", press the button.
You will be popped with a message stating the Internet connection will be terminated, select Yes, press the button.
Select "Wired Connection", press the button.
Select Easy or Custom and adjust the settings.
If you select Easy, then the basic settings are automatically set.
If you select Custom, then you need to enter the settings. Refer the settings supplied by your Internet service provider.
Before connecting the ethernet cable to the back of your Playstaion3 hold the modem reset button for 15 seconds, when 15 secs are up connect the ethernet cable to your ps3 system, wait until tour Comcast High Speed Internet goes online again (all the lights are showing fine) then try setting up your Playstation connection settings again, it might work since now you have reseted your modem and the modem will send information to new device, I hope this information works for you, :)
Ok first off create a psn account online via computer, this is free of charge. Then after that connect your ps3 via cable to your modem. turn it on and access network settings. Then select internet connection settings, select easy. After it is finished select test connection. Should this time out it means you have a faulty connector somewhere, try checking your cables and the ports on the ps3 and modem. But if it states connected, back out and go to network via your ps3 dashboard then select sign in and enter your account info from your psn account.
Try going to the settings, then network settings, and then go to internet connection test, and then push yes when prompted. If there is an error still then maybe your connected wrong or you need to call your internet provider and let them know what is going on. They will walk through it with you.
- scroll to settings
- network settings
- internet connection settings
- select wireless
Follow the on screen instructions, and use the 'easy' set up option as it is all that is required on most.
For your Router:
- Know the SSID
- Have WEP key or any security info to hand
- If you have the SSID broadcast switched off on the router, it may not appear on the PS3. If the PS3 cannot locate your network, try enabling SSID broadcast.
if you want to be able to play your ps3 downstairs with your modem upstairs, you might consider buying a Wireless Router that has Wireless G , for your PS3. This will allow you to access your Internet all around your house without wires. I suggest looking for one that features MIMO or range plus max, or anything else that increases your signal range since there is a fair amount of distance involved.
The alternative is relocating your modem downstairs and hooking it up to the PS3. BUT your computer wont have Internet.
I have comcast to what i did, because i had the same problem as you was I reboot my modem if you have a modem you can reboot it in the back but first unplug everything from the back all the cords then reboot it last. wait five minutes plug everthing back into plugs and you should get your connections back you would probably have to do this everything you connect to ps3 online hola back if it was helpful email DAUSRD@comcast.net
The ps3 wifi is very finicky --
While the ps3 scans for a hotspot turn the router off then on so the router aquires the ps3.
Goto network settings
Goto network connection, select enable
Goto Internet connection settings just below internet connection-
Push yes when it says you may be disconnected
Select wired or wireless
For wireless use scan or enter manually
Follow on screen instructions.
Once that is set up return to main menu and go to network near the right
Then once in the internet browser press triangle and goto file and enter the internet address you would like visit.
If all else fail use the ethernet cable to attach it to your laptop. Then run network setup on the laptop and add the ps3.
