Question about Western Digital Passport WDXML800UE (WDXML800UETE) 80 GB Hard Drive

WD My Passport 250 GB

My WD 250 has been working wonderfully for the past 5 months-no problems. However, the yesterday, I accidentally pulled the USB cable out of the hd while it was running - this is the hd end of the cable, not the end at the pc. After I plugged it back in Windows does not recognize it and says there are no drivers installed. I tried it with another computer and it gave the same message.

Windows quote of the problem: "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognized it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."

I have absolutely the same problem with my 250GB WD Passport. Tried different PCs with Win 2000, Win XP and Vista. Tried to reinstall drivers and use different short USB cables (even a dual-USB booster). Does not help. Ready to send it to WD for a replacement.

I have exactly the same problem. I have tried everything from uninstalling all the usb devices in the dm and tweaked the registry. Also installed the data life-guard tool from wd...windows version but it could not see the hard-drive.
    http://www.soft82.com/download/windows/d...

I looked in the registry and was able to see that it was in fact mounted though.I am now looking for the dos version of the data-lifeguard tool that doesn't rely on using a floppy disk...as I don't own a floppy drive.

Does anyone know where i can download the latest lifeguard tool for dos? Thanks! Angela

Sometimes, portable drives need more power than a USB port provides. If this is a laptop, be sure it is plugged in to power and not running off battery. Also, if you have TWO usb plugs on the end of the wire, plug them BOTH in. This provides the extra power needed.

1 If the warranty is valid> get another drive and install it according to the instruction set. the hassle is better than trying to fix what is broken or defective without the tools to do so.

Why wont my Western Digital WD Passport 250GB Portable Drive 250 GB Hard Drive work?

Several possibilities:

* bad USB port in your computer (try another USB port)
* messed-up copy of Windows (try connecting to a different computer)
* damaged USB cable between computer and the Passport (replace it)
* bad disk-drive inside the enclosure (replace it)
* bad USB-to-disk-drive adapter (buy a new "empty" enclosure)

Check the warranty on it, to see if W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you. If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- buy a new Passport through their web-site, and you qualify for a discount on your purchase.

WD Passport Drive running SLOWWWWW on time machine

USB s slow and when you have huge files it tends to bog it down. it is better to have a firewire transfer. another reason could be your computer is doing to much. leave the computer at one task. walk away and let it work. otherwise you will be using memory.

I want to completely remove all of the WD software.

You should simply be able to go into your control panel and then head to add/remove programs. Look for anything listed as WD or Western Digital and remove it. Do not worry about accidentally removing any drivers for your drive to operation. A USB drive is a simple device that any OS can automatically install and use.

Local disk error WD My Passport 250GB

Do you connect & disconnect the drive according to WD's recommendations here? Try another cable. (If yours was wearing out, that might explain why it only connected some times.) Try another usb port. Check the power supply (another receptacle) Unplug other usb devices from the system.
See this article. Good luck!

WD 250 GB external hard drive is not being detected by system

Hi !

First check if your WD is running (spinning), no matter if the blue light is on. Can you hear it close with your ear, or feel vibrations on your hand when it starts.

If it runs, then check/replace the USB cable you are using with another.
Check the Power supply if it gives necessary power.

If you are familliar with disassembling/assembling, then open and remove the HDD from the box and try to connect the disc directly to your PC (using another HDD Data/Power cables).

If it runs, and you can acces it, then something is wrong with the Box.

If it doesn't, then the HDD is broken or damaged.

Please note that if your device is under warranty, DO NOT open the box ! Contact your seller for service/replacement instructions.

Regards.
